SEO Techniques From A Marketing Seminar

Ok so a couple of the girls from my company went to a seminar where there were various speakers talking about different seo, content marketing and all that kind of stuff. Anyways
one of the speakers was suggesting a tool called

magicsubmitter.com

Now I know things like this are probably not recomended but would like a few more opinions on magic submitter before I go back to the girls and tell them to completely forget any talk of magic submitters or other automated seo tools

If that's the sort of garbage the seminar is promoting then I'd be wary of anything else they suggested.

Some of the speakers we're actually very good and we're promoting good content strategies and then this guy got up and was promoting that magic submitter...
Also he was asked by the audience how he would handle someone else using his "unbeatable" techniques and his answer (on stage in front of a room full) was that there were "secret" ways you can remove competitors..

Not that free is a bad thing, I've presented for the FSB and talked about the similarity of eBay and Google and had great feedback. I wasn't selling anything, I was telling people how to SEO their websites DIY. That was when I had purple hair ..

WOW I can't believe this was recommended in a marketing seminar!! Just looking at it gives me shivers!! Yes what people have said above is exactly right, this will likely ruin your rankings. Sure it might have worked 10 years ago, but these are different times and will not do you any good.

Free marketing seminars... I guess you get what you pay for!!

How do you know they are good strategies? Maybe they were just very convincing speakers.

theres better alternatives, I assume he won't of been reccomending you use that on your money site, will be for tier 1 if you're going blackhat or tier 2 whitehat/grey hat

Its horses for courses really, tools have their uses. If your asking if you should use it on your main site, then id have to say no, but for video marketing its a great tool. If your looking for backlinks its a good idea to reverse engineer your competitors backlinks.

I agree with boring-friday.....its also good if you have a pbn and use it on tier 2/3 or if your going blackhat and want a churn and burn site. I only use whitehat so yeah, good for video marketing, bad for main site

Which just means you end up duplicating all their junk links. May be better to analyse their links and then do something different.

Becoming an effective black hat is quite a skill these days. It's probably easier for most non-technical people to earn links now than pull off a black hat campaign.

eg. Organise a charity event relevant to your business. Invite the press and local bloggers, benefit from coverage and links.

Just one of thousands of easy things that are much more 'natural' fits for the skills people typically have in their business than becoming an elite black hat.

oh and there really is no such thing as a manufactured link that is 'white hat' as technically all link building done with the aim of increasing ranking is black hat.

It is just a lighter shade of Grey

As a "general rule" white hat is legit (not really trying to game the system) - good guys like us.
Blackhat is using frowned upon/illegal ways solely to game the system (spam etc)
Greyhat is anything inbetween - And please, before i get pounced on, i did say it was a "general rule" Nothing specific or in detail.

Whitehat techniques for backlinking for local businesses would be a link back from local forums, online magazines, other local websites etc (this is in no way detailed and just an example)

Local areas will often have a forum/business directory you can register and post to, also local magazine sites and newspapers will also have directory pages/classifieds pages. Reaching out to online publications, and offering to write an informative article can often get you a link to your site if they accept it.

Contact local businesses in a similar sector to yours and offer to post their link on their contact/links page - so if you are a pub or eatery with a function room, maybe contact funeral directors, wedding planners, etc.... say you will post their link on your site if you can post yours on theirs.

Their are many other ways, but its too indepth to post here - ill put together a pdf which will show it in more detail - ill pm you once its done (im pretty busy and it could be a couple of days)

Very true "oldwelshguy" - ANYTHING done with the aim of increasing ranking "could" be classed as blackhat/greyhat as your doing it with the sole intention of gaming googles algos, even site structure (if done for this sole purpose)

This got me thinking all weird again (happens from time to time )
If someone had never heard of seo in any form, and randomly built a site, with amazing seo structure, content, and in/outbound linking, just by chance - would that be whitehat/greyhat/blackhat/ or any other kind of hat, because there was never any intention of such a thing - is the existence of "hats" only primarily with intention it is done with in the mind.

I dealt with a site that got penalised because we got them picked up and mentioned in the Times colour supplement. A rush of links and Google decided they were spamming.

In short, Google are rubbish

So getting a non-contextual link from a directory that probably has hundreds of other links is white hat, also exchanging links with websites is considered white hat ? What if I buy hundreds of news, newspapers, magazines and online publication websites and place my links on there, is it black hat then ?

Can you explain me what is gray-black hat ?
