SEO results without using webmaster tools, sitemap the lot?

I currently have a guy working on my seo which has achieved some great results for my keyword ranking however I'm wondering how its been achieved as currently my new site has not had the on-page/yoast seo setup, google cannot access my site, I don't have a sitemap and google hasn't actually crawled the site for probably 2 months now so how is it possible to get such good results?

Have you asked what he's doing?

It sounds like he's doing some blackhat stuff (private blog networks etc) which can yield results. However, and i'm speaking from experience here, the long term effect can be devastating.

Once Google get's wise to it you'll lose all rankings. And they probably will, eventually.

if it's a long term business investment you might want to reconsider what you're doing..

Anyone can get a site ranking that is as easy as knocking a cup of tea over. The skill is in not getting it banned in Google. Black hat is fine as long as you realise you simply can't build a brand with it, it is all churn and burn.

Run away! I'd be very worried if they can't indicate the general approach (you don't need to know the details).

The site itself needs a lot of work before you consider paying for SEO. No point in ranking for anything until the site is fixed (and it's painfully slow to load as well).

There should be no secrets between you and any service provider, never mind an SEO provider.

Would you hand over the work to a builder to build you a house if he said that he couldn't tell you what materials he was going to use for the foundations?

How old is the site? I did a quick search and saw a forum post with a signature link in it, this might have been from 2012.

If the domain has history and the keyword is weak then it's possibly that since a site update the site could rank relatively quickly.

I'd agree that he shouldn't have any secrets.

As for having a webmaster tools account set up, that's not really necessary for ranking. Sites rank well before GWT was on the scene, it's more of a diagnostic tool.

First of all - how competitive is the keyword?Did you know the search volume of the keyword before he started to work on it?

Sometimes business owners choose keyword they want to rank for not knowing it has absolutely no value. Keyword has no competition and results are achieved within a month or so with improved on-page SEO and barely any links.

So perhaps by "it's a secret" he meant "I've changed a title and keyword went up".

Hopefully your keyword wasn't "manzanita wood branches"

I'm not surprised about the good results and that thing called "secret" by your SEO guy. I noticed that there is an misunderstanding in your agreement and its important that the client is aware of the activities that the optimizer is implementing on the site (internal and external).

You need to have your SEO tell you what he is doing immediately and threaten to call your solicitor if they won't tell you. Once Google bans you they often life time ban you. This is a very serious situation. They are likely black hatting some link scheme, which Google has announced very soon Links won't matter, so even if they don't catch him all these fake rankings will eventually catch up to you. You need an SEO who does all the right things and fast... You need to get on youtube and watch matt cutts advise on what to do when you think you have unproper links coming back to you. There is a way to fix it and then self report and likely avoid penalties but you don't have much time.
