Hi all

A quick SEO question

If i were to give you two keywords we are working on, is it possible for you to tell me how competitive they are and how strong the competiton is for these keywords.

I know you cant guarantee Page 1 or position 1 but in your own mind you would be able to say "you know what, i could get them there".

Should i post the keywords on here or if you wanted to PM me i will reply with them

Also, is it better to work on more than two keywords or does that depend on what or how competitive the keywords are?

Thanks in advance

James

Hi James,

Best thing is to type them into google and see how many search results are brought up - this should give you a fair idea of how competitive they are.

Doing SEO on sites can take a few months or a few years - just depends on how many other companies like yours are chasing the same positions.

I'm sorry but this is really bad advice..... it's really bad because if the op takes the advice and plumps for the wrong keyword based on the advice he could well waste a lot of money, or a lot of time chasing the wrong key word.

The number of pages which mention a keyword/phrase is not connected in any way to how competitive/strong the competition is. Just because something has millions of result, does not mean that any of those websites are actually performing quality SEO against their sites..... and on the flip side, a phrase which only has a few thousand results may actually be very competitive.

1,000,000 results but 0 sites performing structured SEO = easy keyword
1000 sites with 500 performing structured SEO = much harder keyword

The only way to properly judge the streangth of competition is to perform a properly structured keyword analysis exercise. This involves looking at the sites in and around your present position, and also those in the top 10, to see what on-site and off-site SEO they have performed.

Actually that isn't at all accurate.

As a qucik guestimate, go to google, type in the phrase take note of the search return volume
then put it in " " and check again
then do intitle:"your phrase"
thewn do inanchor:"your phrase"

Then do a search, make a note of homw many backlinks the #1 site has
make a note of how many backlinks the #10 site has
check the ages of the domains in the top 10

and then you will have a better idea of the rough competition for those phrases.

Firstly, as previously said looking at the number of results is NO way to check how the competitiveness of a keyword.

There are multiple factors you need to take into account. Firstly check the backlinks and see what anchor text they are using, how many pages are linking to the page which is high for that keyword and what is the quality of those links, as well as whether or not the sites linking are an authority or not.

Secondly, are the sites optimized for said keyword? Is the keyword in the title, URL, domain name, article (density - use something like SEOQuake to check that), H1 Tag.

Another indicator is the Google Adwords tool. The competitiveness checker there is for Adwords, but it's likely to be somewhat mirrored in SEO (Make sure you use an exact match for the search, not the default broad).

Use ALL these factors combined and make an educated decision.

Or if you're lazy, there are tools which can calculate the difficulty for you; such as SeoMoz's keyword difficulty checker. I'm sure there are others out there as well, a quick google would probably be good, but I can't say how useful they'd be.

As for whether or not you should optimize for more than two keywords. Yes! Optimize for as many keywords as possible, the more content you have the more keywords you can optimize for. I'd recommend starting with Longtail keywords, these are keywords with very little traffic (So you don't need to do much to get to rank 1) and slowly build your way up to the bigger more competitive keywords.

Good Luck and I hope this helps :)

Thank you for all the replies people.

It just confirms that SEO is a minefield but also you need to know the basics before handing over any money to a company or person.

Wish us luck...

Yeah just make sure you get lots of quotes and speak to who ever gives you the quotes. Ideally you want to be talking directly to the SEO not a sales person for obvious reasons. There are a lot of good companies and consultants out there but it takes time and research to find them - so good luck! :-)

Never mind using 2 key words but use only 1 landing page.

Keyword competition is the most important factor in ranking to the top. If it is a more competitive keyword it takes time to rank, if it is less competitive, you can push to the top in the very short time.

One important thing is that although you'll take the quantity into consideration, not all links are equal weight.

Some sites may have thousands of crap links, that count for little.

You can trump this with a lower number of really good targetted quality links.

So it's not all about the number/quantity of links.

Which is why counting the number of links as a measurement of an SEO's work is quite pointless.

You need to do some effect keyword research. Are you using the right keywords? You should google 'long tail keywords.' Also you can use google keyword tool and wordtracker to see how effect your chosen keywords will be.

Good advice. Then start checking the quality of each of the competitor's backlinks or at least a cross section of them.

I thought it may be interesting to give an insight into one of the metrics we use to measure competition.

hexbug.png

This is a recent keyword research example, for a product called "hexbug Nano". It's a childrens toy, and if you have kids you will have heard of it!

The results in this table show the top sites on Google.co.uk for the phrase "hexbug nano". Looking at the various pieces of data you can see how well (or not) each site has been optimized towards the target keyword;

TITLE/URL/DESC relate to the meta tags of the page and the URL. If these have not been set to include the target keyword, it is a fair indication that little or no optimisation has been done. As you can see in these results, 4 of the sites are clearly targetting "hexbug nano", as they have it included in the TITLE, and DESCRIPTION tags, as well as in the URL.

BLP Indicates the number of backlinks the competitor has built to the page...again, another strong indicator as to how hard they are working on the keyphrase.

PR Is another important factor. High PR sites will usually be the better ones, and stiffer competition.

By looking at the top 10 or so sites in this way, you can gain an understanding of generally how stiff competition is, and if a phrase is going to be worth targetting.

I use a software that tell me straight away if the keyword is hard or not:)
and give me the right option:p
or...you can use the google tools and check the competition on your words:cool:

It is essential to use the right keywords and rank top in the competition. This is a great way of getting traffic to your website. The keywords have to be monitored well in order to understand how they rank. Moreover the web pages related to the keywords should contain the relevant information. It does not matter how many keywords you are using, it is essential to mange them well and great results can be acquired.
