Selling a Domain name !

Hi All,

sorry for the rather basic question, but i received an e-mail this morning from someone wanted to buy a domain name i own and don't use. I won't ever use it and the offer is pretty decent so i will accept.

Never done this before. I registered it on 123 reg some time ago. So what do i need to do to sell it. Do i receive money via paypal and then somehow sign it over to him through 123 reg control panel?

It will depend on your domain name. Every domain TLD (eg .co.uk, .com etc. ) has it's own set of rules for transferring ownership.

I suggest contacting 123-reg Support to be 100% sure of the correct procedure.

This is a classic technique where you get contacted about buying your name (your details can be found by a whois lookup) they make an offer for your domain, say £500.00 and then they 'accidently' pay you £2000.00. The next email says, we accidently overpaid you, can you pay us back the difference. So you pay them £1500.00 and then their original payment never clears fully in your account and you have lost £1500.00

You could always list it with a broker such as Sedo or Namedrive. Doing that way will mean the payment is taken securely and held with the broker until the transfer completes, then they will pay you directly into your paypal/escrow account.

The buyer shares the same bank i do and we have checked each other out.
He has also transfered the money already and it's in my account. It's the price he offered and i agreed to.


Do i now just e-mail him the Auth code from 123 reg, which i have? :|

What is the domain and what is the offer (PM if you like) as a 'decent offer' may be quite abit lower than what its worth.

Transfers if its .co.uk are done via Nominet and are fully digital - there is a cost of a tenner though.

I seem to have done it following the instruction on 123 reg.

The domain is probably worth more, but to be honest, i don't use it, i won't use it and i can't be bothered of going to all the trouble of advertising it etc. Don't have the time, so accepted and hopefully the person can use it well and create something with it.

It's a 2 step process - there needs to be a transfer via Nominet & also get it moved into the buyer's 123 reg account.

1. Go to https://secure.nominet.org.uk/auth/login.html - login and click registrant transfer. Enter the buyer's email address. The buyer will need to accept the transfer.

2. If the buyer is keeping the domain at 123 reg, he'll need to contact them and make sure that the domain gets moved into his account.

There is an option in the 123-reg control panel to move a domain across to another 123-reg account for free

Moving TAGs or intra-123reg accounts does not alter the registrant ie. legal owner

Agree with robertt. If you just do the 123 reg transfer, the domain may be in your account, but that doesn't mean you are the legal owner. It's the Nominet transfer that changes legal ownership.

The OP says earlier on in the thread that he has the 'auth code' for the domain which suggests to me it is not a Nominet domain and therefore will not have an IPSTAG.

Which means bad news for the buyer as he might find you nicking the domain name back from him, and it is bad news for the seller if the domain name ended up being used for illegal purposes, like god forbid child pornography.
