Hi,

I have been looking for self drive hire car insurance recently and I have spoken to all the large companies in this market who all tell me due to the market struggling no insurance companies are taking on new clients which is a big problem when you want to start a business which is focused around renting out a vehicle to the public.

Does any one know of any self drive hire car insurance companies who are taking on new businesses at the moment?

Or of a way around self hire drive car insurance that would allow the public to drive a vehicle fully insured that they have rented off me, I have thought of stating they have to get their own short term insurance but I am unsure whether I can do this? Plus is it not ideal.

Thank you for your help
Nathan

Many small companies have closed due to the margins being so low with increases on insurance
Look at any small vehicle rental company you will always find they are part of another business maybe a garage or petrol station

You could look at approaching the small/medium car rental franchises and signing up under their wing. They can offer a blanket insurance policy, plus other benefits along with financing and main dealer contracts. Having a customer with their own insurance for a hire car without insurance is very difficult, if at all possible nowadays.

Been in the vehicle rental business for years so, if you have exhausted all available therapy. try Alan Boswell insurance brokers an expensive option is Tradex. Most insurers who do cove self drive hire want to know that the rentl company operator has experience in the business.

Do not try the short term hire route. There are cowboys out there who do this the pitfalls are:
    • In the small print rental vehicles are often specifically excluded (for instance with Tempcover)
    • When your vehicle is not on hire it is not insured so you are breaking the law
    • Finance houses will want to see proof of insurance cover
    • If a customer is delayed in returning and that is after the insurance period has expired your neck is on the line. Even if an accident does not happen you are permitting a vehicle to be used on the road without insurance.
    • If there is a claim then you have the problem of getting your car repaired as the insurance is with the driver not the car owner and this can prove very time consuming.

I think this is good example Wevet hires vehicles but its not his only business
