Royalty free images

Hi all,

I am in the process of designing my website through wordpress and was hoping that someone would be able to provide me with any sites which would allow me to use images for free on my website.

Any advice would be much appreciated - thank you

Do not confuse 'Royalty free' with 'Free'.

Royalty Free means that there is only a set fee charged, usually by size, rather than a more complex charge based on various criteria such as location,media, numbers etc etc. The pictures are not free.

Use someone like Istock. It doesn't cost much to buy credits from them and you can be confident you are getting quality images and not infringing on any copyright.

Nuno, you are right - I was hoping for a completely free resource as the images are more for 'filling' so to speak.

Which you are using to generate revenue from, therefore unreasonable to expect them for free.

If it is a commercial site, it will be difficult to find any images for free.
I use http://www.sxc.hu/ and foter when I need images for articles for example

How are background images going to allow me to generate income? If someone is going to buy my products/service through background images on a website then send me those customers all day!

I am simply looking for background images for design purposes - if I intended to make money through the use of them then I would be more than willing to pay for them.

if you want free images why not use flikr?

Look here: http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/ for more details and there are some very good images, which usually need nothing more than an accreditation on your website.

The majority of websites are advertising streams for their owners, whether that be for directly selling a service/product, or for selling affiliate links (see the left hand column of this website). Images are just another part of the advertising.

Even if it were not advertising however, you should still be paying. I would not expect to walk into a shop and pick something up for nothing, whether it were for business purposes, or just for me generally.

Considering how cheap images are for websites it seems a bit of a waste of time to hunt for free ones.

Try www.shutterstock.com pay up and get on with the important stuff of your business.

One thing to remember is that you ensure you conform to the terms of the site you get the images from. If they say you have to put a citation below the image, then that is what you must do, no good putting the image citation in tiny font size in the footer.

Failure to follow the conditions of use, pouts you in the position where you can be sued.

and for the record (as mentioned above) 'making money from the website' pretty much means having them on a commercial site. You have admitted yourself that you are using the image to enhance the user experience, i.e. to build trust, to encourage them to buy from you. It is all part of the commercial experience, and as a result classed as making money from use of the images
