I have a few weeks old dating website and I have around 70 real members. I want to start building a few quality backlinks for SEO. What is best sites to go for? I am also doing a few videos for youtube.

How much money have you got?

100K should be enough for the first year. And this isn't a joke guesstimate, it's a reality check. It is enormously expensive to promote a dating site.

The big players are spending millions on marketing (which includes link building).

If I have millions I won't be on the forums to get help and I don't want 100k links I want 5-10 quality links per month and start it slowly.

lol. Dating niche is pretty tough but just do your research before you post anywhere. Guest blogging would probably be your best bet or a paid links on niche specific sites.

Thanks for your advice. How about if I publish PR on1888PressRelease and a few other sites? Would it be good start?

There are loads of really good articles on Site Pro News about link building and article writing/guest blogging etc. Dating is going to be tough, but good on you for getting it started. The potential client base is huge and you only need a small percentage to make some money

Nothing you suggest is going to work. Your competitors are spending thousands on link building. If you don't have the funds to match them then you don't have any chance of survival. For ever great link you get your competitors will get 10. For every pound you spend on marketing they will spend £100. You do a you tube video, they have TV commercials.

Sorry for all the negative but you can't run a dating site on the cheap.

I have to say whilst the industry is competative there is undoubtably lots of volume to go around its probably the most evergreen market in the world, everyone wants relationships of one kind or another.

If your intention initially is growing your membership I would focus on generating leads via paid traffic.

I have been a dating publisher for nearly 5 years and I can tell you in my experience the best traffic is

  • POF advertising
  • FB advertising
  • Display Media Buying
POF is going to be the best place to start, after all where better to promote dating than on a dating site? however be aware there are a lot of targeting options, the competition is fierce and you need to be creative with different angles to stand out from the crowd, but get it right and its very targeted, there is the potential to drive hundreds if not thousands of leads per day.

Hope this helps a little, feel free to ask any questions :)

The most reasonable approach for dating is to either go hyperlocal or go hyperniche.

If you're doing a dating site for people within 5 miles of Kensington, then you've got a shot. If you're doing a dating site for people who own purebred cats in Wales, then you've got a shot. If you're doing a speed dating site for people over 40 who earn £250k+ per year and live in Edinburgh, then you've got a shot.

Before you try promoting by starting off with 'free' auto-approved bookmarking, press releases, article sites - stop. Take that playbook and throw it out the window.

Yes, you can beg for links by contacting niche site owners and asking nicely. It's like finding Miss RightNow in a pub on Friday night. Make enough approaches/pitches and despite wearing a good many drinks (from the disgusted Miss's who said no thanks), eventually you may win the lotto. Numbers game, churn and churn and churn and you'll get some backlinks that way.

Pay for sponsored posts. Budget several hundred quid, per post, doing several posts per month and you may get enough momentum to hit the charts.

Yes, you can submit free posts which you've spent hours writing yourself, papering the internet with them, and eventually someone may post one of them. Surely your time is worth something in writing and soliciting the publication of these. You'll waste hundreds of hours this way, but will get some links here and there.

If you have a shoestring budget, then focus tightly on your target market, link beg as per above former suggestion, buy some hyperlocal advertising and get cards and flyers in every mailbox, letter slot, person's house, dog house, outhouse, windscreen, shop window, for a 20 block radius. You will get some interest that way.

Hey
I have mentioned that in one of my previous posts.

It's worth to specialize in a specific sector. That's why we keep seeing e.g Muslim Dating in UK, Polish Dating, Single mothers.. they all chose a specific sector and became an excellent businesses.

Maybe the help for you would be to choose one and then start advertising for it?
By advertising I mean everything you can possibly imagine.. SEO, leaflets, paid ads, email campaigns.. But please do not spam your potential users.

People don't mind to be advertised to as long as you don't annoy them.
80yrs old lady wouldn't want to receive a leaflet saying that she can meet young single in her area am I not right? This would be loss of quality and money for your leaflet.

Regarding companies spending a lot of money to advertise. Yes this is true, but how did they get so much money to do that?

They all started just like you, so keep going no matter what, build your brand and gain trust, sooner or later your efforts will be rewarded.

- Link building
I've seen a great video on link building by one of SEO World professional..
He says that link building doesn't exists anymore *or should not*. This is something that is useless and time taking.

Do you think that Facebook pay somebody to get few links to their website? - No.
Facebook has delivered a great stuff, great content and a great application that is useful. If you provide a valuable content for your target audience, they will want to know more and share. Just think.. how many times did you share something great with your friends? ...

Facebook has delivered a great stuff, great content and a great application that is useful

Citing one of the largest brands as an example of how to do it likely isn't doing any small business owner a huge favour.

If half of what Zuckerberg reportedly did is true, then he's definitely not the right guy to model yourself after anyway. Sure FB is worth more than you could ever spend, but Zuck wouldn't have done it with great content or a great application alone.

There's thousands of great writers (both prose and application engineers) who are dead broke, not because of the quality of their work but because of market readiness, marketing support, funding, and a hundred other reasons.

Understanding how deep the water is, which way the current is dragging you and the fact that you won't last 20 seconds in 1ºC water is important to know before jumping in with both feet. In much the same way, understanding your market capacity, readiness, competition and cost to reach critical mass as a competitor are all critical to surviving in a hyper-stuffed niche like dating.

If you're going to model after someone, figure out what your poorest top 10 ranking competitor has done to get there, then do it better, cheaper, faster.

Remember, you don't have to invent or innovate to do well.

If you recall The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon and Leonard are discussing facing their fears (quotes courtesy of IMDB, who are quoting the series script):

Leonard: Yeah, I feel pretty good about myself. You think we can outrun him?
Sheldon: I don't need to outrun him. I just need to outrun you!

You don't need to be MZ at FB. You don't need to develop usable cold fusion, a teleporter or figure out how to make an extendable, foldable computer display for 99pence.

You do need to find a market segment that you can penetrate with the coins in your pocket and time available to manage and market it. You do need to do better than the competition - faster, cheaper, better (one or more of these).

Exploit an inherent weakness in the models of others (too broad so they carry irrelevant results, too slow to be usable, poor quality photos that don't look like the people, not vetting the people via background checks so that they match you up with serial killers, etc, etc). Find the hole and plug it!

Yes good point, what I mean is the great way of building an online presence is to provide valuable content for your target audience.
As soon as someone likes what you do, they will want to share it.

The easiest way to get results in this niche is to buy targeted traffic and work on your front end lead conversions and then your conversion funnel on the backend which turns leads into paying members.

Once you have it converting and know what the average value per customer is, I would be approching CPA networks and working out a price you are prepared to pay per lead, this is how the big boys in the industry are doing it and these types of networks have single affiliates that will be able to push 1000's of leads per day.

Forget linkbuilding and SEO to begin with, there are much faster ways of driving cheap highly targeted traffic that is going to give you results fast (like today fast), I repeat my earlier statement check out ads.plentyoffish.com you will be thanking me in a weeks time.

Also consider signing up for a free (fake) account at the main plenty of fish site using the exact demographics of your target audience, then look at the ads that are being served, click through (dont worry ads are CPM so it doesnt cost the advertiser more if you click, they are paying per 1000 impressions) look at the landing pages they are sending you too, look at the end offer page, sign up, see how there sales funnel works, you need to be modeling what these sites are doing.

This is not theory, this is FACT, do this properly and you will see results :D

I promoted a dating site though for a year or two. It was a very active process but cost me next to nothing. In the end though that was the balance. Either a lot of time or a lot of money and the ratio of effort or cost to reward was not good enough. Too much competition.

Dating niche can be very hard to market as this is one of the most competitive niches. I suggest you focus on building followers through social media or perhaps also try to ask affiliates to market your website. Having your own blog also helps.

You need to go where you audience is. Try dating forums, local forums, meeting exchange sites, etc. Try engaging your audience and getting some traffic that way, this can naturally turn into backlinks.

You really don't need £100k to optimise a dating site and get it ranking. You just need to concentrate on really good content that focusses on long tail traffic (although this needs to be implemented in a clever way after the recent Google Hummingbird update).

The fact you're working on videos is a great start. You should use these to full effect on video sharing sites and setup some content based around them on your dating site. Anything that can help your site stand apart from the competition.

Whatever they're doing - try doing something different.

Does your dating site have a specific niche?

Feel free to drop me a line if you want some help on this.

Why are you asking for this advice and advice on SEO software for beginners while simultaneously promoting your site (bestwebsitesdesigner.com), which offers SEO for hundreds of dollars / month?

Also, if you want to put up a fake Miami web design website, take your Indian contact details out of the WHOIS.

I suspect this is an Indian spam company building up posts.

As per advice above, niche anything is always the best way to sneak into a market and corner your own little piece, without really having to fight the big boys. We have a niche dating site and it works well for us, but a lot of that is on the back of our other activities (although we do have some good ranks).

Unfortunately there are few niches now that haven't been exploited to the max in dating...
