I have one particular product on my website that I would like to try and promote specifically, my first thought was google ads or google shopping ad (excuse the ignorance, haven't really used this before)

the product is reasonably niche, and not many, if anyone, has it currently available for retail

i know the market reasonably well, and I might then have more similar but equally hard to source products available that i would then like to promote

they won't ever be high volume, but for us they represent higher margin, but need them to be found!

any pointers would be gratefully received

Google Ads may be an option, depending on how niche the product is. If the keyword phrase is too niche (e.g. "widgets for purple midgets") then Google won't allow you to be precise about your targeting (they will just reject the keyword phrase). If it's too broad then that may bring in the wrong traffic (e.g. if your widgets are actually only for midgets but you can only advertise under 'red widgets' as a keyword phrase, then you may get clicks from people who aren't midgets, even if your Google Ad makes it clear that only midgets should be clicking).

A good starting point would be to type your keyword phrase into Google and see if any ads (specific to your product) appear, and what the search volumes are like.

If the products are that niche it could be that organic SEO is an easier (albeit more long-term) win for you.

Create a detailed single product sales page and push all of your marketing towards that.

Also, make sure it is featured on the homepage of your website.

Your single product page should be insanely optimised both for SEO and sales

You need to know the search volume for all variants of searches relating to your products and also track all of these searches for your current and ongoing Google rankings and from this you will know who your competitors are, what they are doing, and how you can create a better landing page

Check your desktop and mobile experience

Ensure a super fast loading speed

Add a very clear main image and additional images, all-with-keywords-in-the-file-name-separated-with-hyphens.jpg and all the caption fields should filled out

Include all the features and benefits

Include testimonials from satisfied customers

Add a short product demonstration video if you can, it's really not that hard to do this nowadays

Add your product to Google Merchant Center

Knowing which ecommerce solution and CMS you're using would help with further advice
