Mr.P

I am in the process of starting my own plumbing company - That's the plan anyhow!!

I have enrolled on a course via Access Training Wales, which should give me the qualification to get set up self employed in the field.

Naturally, being such a competitive market, I will need a web presence with SEO

It's going to take me 10-12 weeks to get started, including the course, I am looking at getting a headstart prior to qualifying.

Ideally I would be looking for someone to assist with business cards, leaflets, web design.

Let me know you're thoughts.

For tradesmen a lot is word of mouth . A good idea is to get fridge magnets or boiler stickers into houses. General plumbers usually get work when something goes wrong ie a leak or failed boiler . People will turn to the nearest source , hence the advice above. A leaflet drop is only going to work if it arrives just when the have a leak, so not my preferred option

Thanks, I have a contact who produces magnetic business cards, so I'm sure I could sort something there.

I think maybe an add in a community mag could be a better option rather than leaflet drop?

I think SEO will be one of the best options as nowadays when something goes wrong the easiest way to find solution is googling it. Therefore, the higher you appear in search results the higher is your chance to be selected.

Don't forget about various directories - Yellow pages are not dead, they just moved online. This will also help you in SEO.

I really liked the idea of magnetic business cards out on boilers. In most cases magnetic promotional materials are quite in relevant, but seems to be a perfect fit for you.

Good luck with courses and marketing :)

Get your Google places listing started NOW. It can take weeks to get the postcard, confirm it, then get Google updated with your location information.

For local businesses, local SEO is a critical component, and Google Places is a key to being found on the maps in local search.

Aside from that, getting the domain registered quickly (same or similar to company name), along with some of the social accounts, so as to stake out your turf is a great way to hold the ground until it's time to build.

Be sure that when you do look to design the site, including creating the text part of the content, you do it with humans and search engines in mind. Some designers make lovely sites that are never found by anyone... some make pish that ranks incredibly well... I'm sure you'd love to have a site that conveys your personality, your angle into the business (professional, responsive, affordable, and/or whatever else you represent), and can be found when someone nearby searches for Cardiff plumbers (or wherever you may be).

That's a few tips to get you started anyway :) Best of luck!

Don't forget to network with estate and lettings agents (those in particular in charge of property management). You'll be suprised how much work you'll get if you can get in with the staff.

Let me get this straight, you're doing a 12 week plumbing course?
