Website architecture is one of the most fundamental yet least understood aspects of SEO, and one which is especially important for eCommerce sites and other sites with a large number of pages. I would venture as far as to suggest that this is one of the things which separates the men from the boys when it comes to SEO, and one which only really comes with time and experience. There are valuable lessons to be learned from owg's post on this thread, I'd recommend that anyone with an interest about SEO for large scale sites have a good read through this reply and apply some of that structural, architectural thinking to their site if they're considering either a new site or a redesign. It's unbelievably easy to mess up the power of a site with a redesign that isn't done with SEO architecture in mind.
