Hi There

I am moving office and want advise on the best telephone and broadband options.

I have looked at various fibre providers but can't understand whether I definatley need a BT line for them to use as most sites ask for a line compatibilty check. ( Which I cant do because there is nothing there yet.)

As I want an internet based phone system I cant set that up until I have broadband?

Advise please.

Oh by the way we are a 3 person company so will need a couple of lines ( not that I think it makes a difference on voip systems??)

Thanks in advance

Hi Adam,

If you are looking at BT FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) services you will need a BT lines for these services.

You should be able to lookup what services are available to you by the post code of the building, feel free to PM me the post code if you want and I can let you know if FTTC is available.

Sometimes you may find that there are "stopped lines" at the new office which are lines from old tenants which can usually be re-activated the same day for a reduced fee. I'd be happy to lookup on the Openreach database for you if you wish.

We do provide phone & broadband services, but I'm obviosly not pushing a sale if I lookup the fibre & phone services for you.

Hope that helps.

Great, I will have a look for you. Do you know which suite you are taking by any chance?

Hi Adam,

I've done some lookups on that address, and the good news is that there are plenty of spare pairs, so there shouldn't be any issues getting lines installed.

Unfortunately there are no stopped lines, so you you would need to go for a normal install.

The other bad news is that FTTC isn't available at that address, and the ADSL 2+ speed available is around 2Mbps, with an upload of 0.1Mbps which is probably be bit low for a decent VoIP system.

You could look at a 2Mbps EFM connection but this will be a big price jump from standard broadband.

I'm assuming there isn't broadband available from the centre itself?

You could get 3 phones working on a connection with an upspeed of 0.1mbs using a low bandwidth codec such as GSM, but that's all you'd be able to do with that connection and it's much less than ideal.

If that's the best you can do, you may be better geting an ISDN2 line and a second hand small PBX - that would give you your three phones (usually 5) but only 2 simultaneous calls would be possible.

Can you talk to people in the centre and get some actual speedtests or the management company for other information?

I can't say I have ever done it myself, but I think you need to upload it to another site first before you can attach it to a post here.

Hi Quickline

You are bang next to Showcase at Birstall, but your feeding exchange will be BTOR at Batley.

Have you considered Virgin Media Business, they might be able to offer an alternative service if BT have not yet rolled out FTTC to your new address yet (although it is scheduled for this calendar year..).

Leo should be able to give you a good steer, however we are based in Huddersfield (JV Comms - Daisy Business partner) so cover your area if you would like some options from us as well ?

Re the fibres I suspect that they will be ISDN30 bearers for voice, rather than raw end user fibres that you can just rent from BT Retail ( who you should avoid like the Plague..)..

Hope this helps

Hi Adam,

1 phone line and broadband seems the best cost effective way with the other lines being off your broadband. CJD can assist you with that. I know that Leo has also given you assistance with your instal, but if you are on a tight budget and dont want to be tied into a contract then please let me know and I would be happy to assist you.

best wishes

Avril :)
