Paypal Vs SagePay/Streamline

Hi there

We have been using Paypal on our website for a fair while now. My main question is......Do you think Paypal puts off many customers?

The main reason I ask is that I have worked out the costs and although Paypal is more expensive per transaction, there is no monthly costs involved, no set up fee, etc. as there is with SagePay and Streamline.

Any words of wisdom?!

Thanks!

Paypal is great as an alternative option IMHO as there rules and course of action can sometimes lead to issues with you as the seller...

As for SP, why not have a peep at the info I have online here => http://www.keymark-services.co.uk/

The plus side to a PSP such as Sagepay is that all the PSS DCI work is done for you AND you can get a fixed deal of £20 for up to 1000 transactions per month.

The downside is that you will have to pay a % to your banks acquiring service (between 1.5% and 3% when I last looked.)

Feel free to shout if you have any other questions....

I am confused?

When I transfer into my UK bank, I pay £0

There fees for transactions are around 3.4% (under £x) plus 20p as far as I am aware.

7%? Where is that from?

Thanks Guys

Looking at other forums I think the best bet is to offer both Paypal and Streamline/SagePay. From what I can gather Paypal does put some customers off if there is no other payment methods accepted and I think it will instil more confidence in the customer if we can do both.

Checkout Paypal Pro. It works like any other merchant account and can accept most credit / debit cards (not Amex). £20 monthly fee.

If its any help we've run a couple of on-line stores for a few years now and after much persuading we agreed to accept Paypal in December (an offer of £500 Cr towards the payment fees helped though!). I was reluctant because of the costs and the additional overhead it introduced into our order handling/checking etc. but we thought we'd give it a go and burn through the £500 and then review it.

We've been surprised at the usage of Paypal, particulalry some of our business sales are coming though via Paypal. The issue we have is that we're not convinced its actually increased sales (certainly not by the amount the Paypal sales team suggested it would) rather it has cannibalised our Credit/Debit card sales on which we pay less.

We're going to let it run for another month or so and see where we go from there. I still remain cautious about the level of chargebacks via Paypal and its too soon to say on this front.

Hi folks, I am at a point to consider this. No online payment system per se yet, shall I look exclusively on paypal pro and sagepay or worldpay should still on the table? Would it possible to lead to abandoned transactions if only use one?

I plan to offer family portrait service, targeting busy mums

Paypal alongside Sagepay is a great option.

The only reason to opt for Paypal pro is if you dont have a merchant account and dont want your customer to be directed away from your site. Paypal pro still incurs the same 3.4% charge per transaction.

This is why Sagepay is a great option if you would like a more slick instegration into your site for credit/debit card processing, however you do need a merchant account (which you can also get from Sage). Yes, Sagepay does cost £20/month, however, you will soon accrue this with paypal with just £580 worth of sales.

Offering Paypal standard along side sagepay will give your customer the option - some will prefer a direct credit card processor - some will prefer to be directed to paypal...

Get in touch if you would like some more assistance with payment options, and how to integrate them into your site.

Wow, out of interest, how did you manage to get a £500 credit towards the fees?! Was this from PayPal themselves? How do I make myself so attractive that they give me a £500 credit.... ! :D

Curious as to what additional overhead the order processing involves?

In previous implementations I have done, payment status is automatically received from paypal, and updates the order status on you site to say 'Payment Accepted'

Hi All

Since my original post we decided to go with SagePay and Paypal. I find this offers the customer an alternative - some often don't have a Paypal account and would be reluctant to open one. Since implementing SagePay we have had an increase in orders and we are probably running at 50/50 Paypal/Sagepay.

I would definitely recommend doing both.

Best,

Wendy

Just a reminder there are more cost effective payment gateways and as equally reliable as SagePay on the market now. We are one such organisation and we give all profits to charity.

Had a look at SagePay, their merchant service charges an annual fee of £120, if you are not PCI compliant within 3 months of setting up, you pay an additional £17 per month. You also pay 2.5% per credit card transaction, 0.40p per debit car trans and 2.5% per commercial card trans. In addition you pay £20 per month for their payment gateway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, paypal seems cheaper.

Hi Billie,

You are absolutely correct about the fees here, Sage do charge an extra £120 a year for PCI compliance.

We absorb the costs of this all at £19.95(Ex Vat) a month.

So we would give you:

Payment gateway
Emid
Virtual Terminal
Moto Mid
Pay By link

all for £19.95 a month. Our rates are allot more competitive.

Give me a call to discuss this on 01159487619

also just to note to Wendy, Our gateway will also allow you to have the option for your customers to pay using paypal.

Kind Regards
