Payments on Account

I have have recently submitted my self assessment return and just wanted to check why under 'current position' it is saying 'you have nothing to pay'

In previous years I have had to make a balancing payment (not needed this year as my payments on account were higher than the liability) and the first of the two payments of account for the next tax year?

My bill was over £1000 so I just wanted to check why it's not asking for the first payment of account and is showing as 'you have nothing to pay'

Many Thanks

The HMRC website has had some issues with this.

If you've got a payment due I really would ignore the amount showing as due and pay the correct figure.

Thanks Nicola, it says under current position that I have nothing to pay ? How much do I need to pay just what the first payment on account is for 18/19 ? It’s very confusing, in the past it would show the value that I needed to pay under the ‘current position’ section

I have paid the tax for 17/18 through the two payments on account last jan and jul

I had the same problem. When I completed the self assessment, they told me the bill for 17/18 and how much I needed to pay on account for 18/19. They'd not taken off the amount I'd already paid on account for 17/18, so were effectively asking me to pay 18 month's tax instead of 6 months.

Once you move away from that screen, there's no way to find out how much you need to pay on account. I've paid just over half of last year's tax, and hope for the best.

Mine just says I have nothing to pay? even though I have not made a payment on account yet for 18/19

Is this a glitch on the HMRC website ?

They don't but my calculation always has words to the effect that it doesn't take into account amounts paid on account.

I've never had a problem, but I don't leave doing my return until the last minute :) By the time payment is actually due, everything is hunky dory and I just pay the amount due.

Unfortunately I don't know what you need to pay having not completed your tax return or being aware of your circumstances. The best thing you can do is check with your accountant.

I had nothing to pay, because the payments on account were just right for 17/18. I get paid the same each year.
