SEO Positive

Dont get too excited, it has not just happened!!!!! :D:D:D

Made you look though didnt it.

Im just wondering when people think the next one will be? How long is a piece of string eh?

The last one was New Years Eve / Day right... So according to my calculations, shouldn't we be due another one soon?

Im guessing by 15th April we will have the next one.

Whats your prediction?

Do people still care about page rank these days?

I would say they do, if page rank was not important why would people try to get links from authority sites with high page rank, maybe these days page rank has been played down a bit but in my opinion id bet you would be happy if any website owned by you went to page rank 4 or above

Or even moaned if it dropped a place or 2, Google have that measure there for a reason im sure they do

Any how back to subject i think were due an update around mid april or there abouts

I can't remember the last time I checked a pages pagerank, I wouldn't have a clue what most of my sites even were these days.

Most people learn that there are better/alternative metrics and that there is a vast difference between pagerank and rankings.

PR tends to be a by-product of good rankings,

good links + page optimisation = rankings + pagerank

rather than

good links + pagerank + page optimisation = rankings

It could happen any time. Maybe even with a six month gap.

For some PR is not only very, very important, it determines how much they make. A small shift in page rank can cause their earnings to go down by several thousand dollars a month.

Oh godz, not the page rank debate! Oh noes.

It still counts - period. (.<--Nice period)

People that think Page Rank doesn't matter any more, do not understand Page Rank. The fact is, it is much more than just a Google applied number, millions of people have PR checkers installed on their browsers and they have their own idea of what is and is not a trusted site. PR helps them decide to a certain extent, or at least sway their judgement and this may mean the difference between a staying visitor and a bouncing one. A sale or no sale.

PR is not about rankings it's about a 10 point star system for all your SEO work but goes a lot further than just that because it's a ranking system of it's own that millions of people gauge a website by.

Saying that - I have not checked my sites like I used to since reaching what I deem is an acceptable level, I do check, but only sporadically and as I visit them, not however to find out if an update has happened or not. It's nice to have a good PR though and a good thing to check for all those that embark on SEO work and in particular on new sites less than a year old.

There are said to be over 200 different factors which determine where your site ranks with page rank being one of them. I think the fact that a lot of people tend to get overly excited about page rank rather than the other 199 factors, is because of the easy to see visual indicator of the little green stripe in the corner of your browser.

You're right, if the PR of my sites went higher then I would be pleased (for about 30 seconds) but I'm not going to be sitting waiting in anticipation for the next update to check if this happens as there are still the other 199 deciding factors to work on.

Take domain age as a key factor for ranking. I had to renew some of my domains the other day and some of them are now 8 years old. Did I celebrate the fact that my domains had their birthday and were now a little older and therefore more 'trustworthy'? Hardly.

You're suggesting that some people would not buy from a particular site simply based on the page rank of their homepage? Or that some people would choose to leave a site based on the PR of the page they landed on??

The PR of this thread is 0, so I guess these types of people wouldnt stay here for long as they would deem it untrustworthy?

Really? Do you have any evidence for this or is it just opinion?

I would suggest that the vast vast majority of 'normal' non-SEO people don't even have the Google toolbar installed, much less understand or care about Pagerank.

It wasn't me who suggested it, but I agree, absolutely. PR is just another trust indicator. SEOs, yes, but also tech types, webmasters, website buyers, media buyers etc., would click away if your homepage was greybarred or had a PR0 / low PR display.

If you're trying to get affiliates to sign up to your program, web designers interested in your software or media types interested in ad buying, you'd do well to spruce up that PR and improve on the embarrassing zero pixel bar - because these people surf with the display enabled!

Of course there are also millions of web users who do not use or understand the PR/Google/Alexa toolbar, or any toolbar for that matter. However those that do of course know that this is a fresh forum thread and will have no PR.

I have a good dozen media agencies that use my services, and a good 275 clients, of these ALL the media agencies check my PR score before placing business my way and many of my clients do also. They do not base their decisions on PR alone but do use it as a facor amongst many others and this is one reason that I deem it important to have a PR score of at least 3.

At the end of the day, what I am saying is: PR may not be a great indicator of rankings, in fact it is not a SERP indicator at all. The important PR factor for me is the trust is gives my website for those that do use it and they number in millions from Media Agencies to bog standard web users.

The thing about PR is that it can easily be manipulated? Both FranchiseShop and Clinton mention the words Page Rank and Trust in the same sentance and this is the same idea that Google likes to push - that the higher the PR, the more trustworthy the site. But all it takes to gain a high PR is buy an expiring domain with an existing PR, and then place a link to the site you want a PR for. Or do a 301 redirect. You only need 1 link from a higher PR site and you get all the PR benefits on the next update. I dont think that something which can be so easily manipulated can be considered a reliable factor of trust?

Of course it can be manipulated, and in a lot more ways than we've discussed so far! And some people make a lot of money from ignorance, fudge and misconception surrounding page rank.

the same idea that Google likes to push - that the higher the PR, the more trustworthy the site.
I don't know if Google said that somewhere, but it's not something I buy into. You don't take the toolbar figure and blindly base your trust level based on that!

15th April

Oh yes and don't I know it!!!!

Google 'personalised cards' and see the display url for Funky P
This is the old site that was re branded and 301'd in January - after advice from a member on here, G had indexed pages that were 302'd, we need to 301 the whole 144 pages......

Plus page rank has dropped from 4 to 3 (for those of you who are bothered)

n.b. Little win - overtaking the piggies!!

Google has recently updated the Page Ranks. I have thirteen websites and among of them I have been updated for 12 websites. All of them are having now an increment of 1 PR excluding one website.
