As you have no clue at all about how to do this, my 'help' is to advise you not to waste your time. Find something to do that you know about.

thanks but no thanks, i have a unique service which i dont want to go into to much detail, but i think there is a gap in the poker market which i could fill.

How do you intend to compete with the big boys out there? It will take some serious investment imho.

You asked about anyone knowing about the software for it, then say you know prices etc, does this then mean you want someone to do it for you programming wise or are you just wanting to sound out the idea on here?

Have you done all your research into it and started forming a business plan?

i have a good idea about whats involved, i just wanted to see if anyone else has been teased by it and if so what have they found out. I just want to sound out the idea really and see if i have over seen anything......

Unless you have something drastically unique, i doubt a niche market is going to do much good especially with the millions in advertising other companies spend.

I play poker alot and i did look into it for fun.

it is drastically unique, im hoping to change the way we play forever.....lol bit optimistic! I belive that it is going to be big, im hoping that because it will be so unique that i can rely on word of mouth to bring in the punters along with the normals web banners and google traffic

Well first you need to learn about it yourself, obviously if you dont even know what software is available you may not have thought about your idea enough to see if its even possible and whether or not it will be worth it.

gregs,

As a keen player I had a romantic notion of doing this and did spend some time looking into this a while back. You're well aware its a highly competitve market. Not only do you have the established casino's and the top pro's with their own sites you also have the brands with an established customer base using that base to leverage their own offering; sky and virgin are two that immediately come to mind.

Some white labels offer a low entry (capital wise) but your actual commission on the rakes is tiny, you would need tens of thousands of players to make even a relatively modest income. Or you go with someone like st. minver but your costs are much greater and you may well need to apply for a gaming licence.

Unless you have an existing customer base that you could value add this with really compelling offers and free bankrolls into medium/large tournaments I think its an uphill battle unless you have £1mill+ to play with.

Just my opinion but would be great fun!

Hi!

Wow wee, there's some pessimists on here LOL its all to do with this economic gloom and doom, people are finding it hard to smile :p (just kidding everyone!)

Go for it greg. i think the bottom line here is no, no-one here does know where you would get that kind of software. I just googled computer programming and came up with a quite a few, including this one:

http://www.peopleperhour.com/quotes... Programmers&gclid=CPTD_Oia5JICFQ9DMAodTSnlwA

it says 'free quotes from programming experts today'. i don't know how good or bad it is, its just one of the first ones i came to.

so once you have a couple of quotes and you know pretty much how much its going to cost, then you can judge the potential of your business better. Have you thought how you're going to market it? I have seen that pkr.com on the tv and every time i see it i want to go onto the website 'just for a look' which very rarely happens with me. i haven't yet though, so it mustn't be that good..

good luck with it, peebles.

hi,

sorry you've already said how you're going to market it - by word of mouth. how exactly? how many people do you know? do you think this will be the most effective way of marketing it?

I was involved in this for a couple of years just before the floatation of the big boys. I had been doing a lot of work with 888 at that stage on off-line promotion and at that stage it was a bust market place. We did look at setting up ourselves as well and got involved with a new venture aimed at the South African market where it was about to take off.

Most of the software providers will suggest you start off with affiliation first to understand the market. There are different levels of entry when getting your own brand started but if you have a different way of doing things and you need bespoke software you will be looking at hundreds not tens of thousand. When I was looking at it we were involved with some very wealthy backers and still decided at the time it would be to costly to make a real go of it.

I'll see if I can dig out some info and let you know of the better options. Some of the providers have damaged reputations from brands using their software going belly up due to allowing anyone to have a go. The better providers are far more cautious.

i wouldn't rely on word of mouth to start with, i just think that the idea i have and the way in which people play and win money will be so good i wont need to have huge advertising/marketing budjets. I coulnt afford to pay for tv or magazine full page adverts. im hoping that i can somehow create a buzz amongst poker players on forums and with exciting web banners and a very well built homepage a few weeks/months befor i launch it.

ok. are you certain that forums allow this advertising? (i have no idea, i'm just asking you). if its such a great idea then there's no harm in distributing it to magazines/tv. you might get a bit of free advertising if they want to include it on their show/magazine - you won't have to pay but you won't get paid either.

if i were you i would work out exactly how you're going to create this buzz. you need to cost it, look at your competitors, work out your strengths and weaknesses, check out your customers - would they use you? why? what makes you so great to tempt them from the one(s) they currently use? all of these plus many many more.

i can help, for a fee! :)

I am interested in your poker idea, espically if your going head to head with the big boys.

Have you thought of teaming up with a betting exchange, or someone with casino games.

Good luck in your endeavour, i know how hard it is to set up anything.

It sounds very exciting, good luck to you!

My only concern would be the risk of building a buzz around you product before you're ready to launch, what is to stop the big guns stealing your idea and investing heavily to launch first?

I think if you've got a USP then you should do fine but be careful is my only warning (not that you asked for this type of advice but hey ho, you've got it now!! ;))

well i hoping to get a patent on the idea....its going to be hard tho as patents need to cover every thing. plus putting a patent out makes it public.

If it is able to be patented do so. Next is a NDA.

Regardless of idea, unless you have major backing this will be virtually impossible. Does the idea need new software to be developed? This doesn't come cheap or readily available from regular web developers. If the idea is any good I would think the big guys in the industry are your best option to seeing a decent return.

If you did want to go this route I do have some contacts very high up in one of the big brands and could let you know more if needed.

I think you are bonkers and wasting your time and maybe money - but then they told Bell there were no need for telephones due to all the messengers boys.

I have moved from one big on line site to another bigger one due to them being better - and you think you are going to compete in this new but maturing market. look at the money at PKR will have had to spend developing their set up and still not that busy.

Good Luck.

i dont think i will need a whole new bit of softwear written for me, but i do know that i will need it in flash. I dont know how secure this is?

So the new idea you have is either cosmetic or to do with player introduction if gameplay doesn't need development. Hope you have done plenty of research as this is a very easy game to lose money on..... and that's without playing. I have been involved with exploring several different development options with one of the very big sites and most fall by the way and never come about. You will need something spectacular to survive in this game.

Good luck.
