New Product - Wordpress Website or Main Store

I've got a new product coming out in July and I was wondering whether I should have (what I quite fancy) a really snappy Wordpress site which then links into our new e-commerce site to purchase...

OR

Do I keep everything on the one site with all the promotion and information on the one e-commerce site?

Depends how much you need/value the Search marketing aspects. A new site has no links, no credibility. Your existing site may be off-topic though, which is also important.

I'm not sure right now. I'm sort of feeling my way through this.

I thought it would be great to have a sideline site that gives you all the information on the products while the store side contains just the relevant details.

I've not really gone much further so I hope someone can give me advice. I've seen plenty of products that fit into both categories (www.vamplets.com is all on one site while http://www.manapotions.com/ is a separate site from the main e-commerce).

Keep it all on one site. Better still, keep all the info for the product on one page.

If you need to summarise for those that just want to do a quick purchase, do. Have the basic 3 line description / bullets and the buy button right at the top near the picture then wax lyrical in the description beneath

Depends on your goals for the product!

If you want to promote it more than the other products then yes a separate site is great, as it will allow you to create it's own marketing (send people to it's dedicated site) and generally have a much wider variation of information than you would have on the site.

There is an argument for both to be honest.

IF the standalone product is micro-niche and in now way related to your main products/services then I would be sorely tempted to go for the mini site.

A well crafted, quality populated site in a micro niche need not take ages to take off AND in the meantime you can always kick start it with some PPC.

BUT if it is anyway linked to your current offering I would opt for a sub domain within your main site and craft it that way.

Not much help I know but from experience, I can tell you the option 1 does not take as long as some will have you believe these days. IF it is truly micro.

Thanks to everyone. This has nothing to do with the current website and I feel a niche site with lots of juicy info will be a lot more popular as this is a very certain / popular kind of product

I really do want a separate site so I think your advice has really helped!

Sounds like a plan. Until you start getting some free traffic you can always use Adwords. If you're careful on your conversion optimisation this can work very well for you.

If you do not need to much extra functionality, only an opportunity to sell online then Wordpress + ecommerce plugin will do the stuff perfectly. It will be one site with both store and blog. I'd go for that. As Nick says, if you create a new separate website it has no authority. Google wants to rank sites based on the value of what they provide so increase the value of the original e-commerce site. For sure, try and get signposts to it from various places such as a wordpress blog (which you can set up with very little cost) but focus on the main site.
