Name for a sweet shop?

Hi,

As some might already know, I am looking into opening a sweet shop in my local town. I've had an idea for a name and wanted to see what you all thought.

The name is....gloop! It's a shop that will be aimed at children/teenagers so I wanted it to be quite random! It's also the surname of Augustus from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

How do you think that sounds? I wouldn't think it would be copyrighted?

I know there's lots of serious stuff to do but I thought I would get the fun out of the way before settling down to the finer details.

Hi Gary, gloop sounds a bit negative to me :|.....although I get where you are coming from. Maybe something positive like Yummies or Yummy. Oh I am no good at names :p:D

My initial reaction was great name but the more I think of it the more I visualise slimey play doh stuff we used to play with, I notice neither .com or .co.uk are available which is a shame as I think online sales would be very important, not to dissalusion you but a local sweet shop has recently closed and this is in a very busy tourist seaside town.

Yeah it does a bit! It could have a cool "splodge" effect logo i guesS?

There must be a 1,000. names you could call your shop, unfortunately that name gloop..not even certain how you say it!!
Simply does not jump off the page 4 me!!
Best idea!! go there when many of your expected customers will be next door! and ask them to NAME..that shop! like they used to do on Blue-Peter with Dogs...even if at the end of the exercise you call it GLOOP!!

Thanks. With a bit of creativity I could get a 'gloop' domain name. The shop is next to 2 schools and there's tonnes of kids outside it every day....marketed right I think it could be a success. :)

Sweet Retreat

Sweet Retreat is the best one for me, it has that "naughty" side to it which sweet shops should have, you could have a super logo with that one too, possibly bright on one side, then a "darker" side on the other, then you could do something similar in the shop, like a bright and vivid side for one, and darker for the other?

I have been thinking and came back to add sugar rush, and you beat me to it :D think that would be a great name. You could run a comp in the schools to name it, you would get loads of joke entries but could be fun, offer a 1 minute 1 handed trolley dash as prize and get loads of local publicity!

What about mixing two names, just an example but

Chocolate + Sweets = Choceets

or basic names such as...

Chocolate Box
Sweet Tooth
Chocolate Heaven

I'm kinda loving 'Jellybean' now. Think that would appeal to a younger crowd (then again, what would I know at 28!!!) :p

Fantastic idea. Not sure with the Jamie Oliver brigade that would go down well in schools but the local paper might be interested. :)

Gloop is green and slimey, yuk! We used to sell the stuff about 18 years ago in our children's novelty vendors, used to be a brilliant seller. Not sure if it has connotations to sweeties though.

Damn - now I want sweets!! :)

I like 'Jellybean' and 'Sweet Retreat' if that's helpful.

Are you going to sell the sweets from the tubs that get measured and put into a paper bag? I know I am showing my age but I miss that?!:)

I don't know any children who could care less what the name of a sweet shop is. Surely if you are near a school and you haven't got a notice in the window banning more than two pupils from entering, kids will go in to the shop anyway. If there is a rival sweet shop in the same parade of shops, concentrate on your window display, or your shop layout to attract the kids.

Reminds me of wanting to buy a pub and call it "taking the dog for a walk"

Ok, I couldn't come up with any ideas for the name but at least a suggestion on what not to call it:

sweat shop :D

Not sure where your based but if there is a fairly large ethnic population you could also sell stuff like bombay mix / chinese peanut things...

In my humble opinion, the name should also reflect the style of shop you plan to open.

Is it going to be an old fashioned 'jars on shelves' type shop where something like 'Mr Magoo's Amazing Sweet Emporium' would be the sort of name you're looking for. Or, is it going to be modern so 'Sugar Rush' is more fitting?

For me, the shop style might be a good lead into an appropriate name.

Run a local competition to choose the name. Nice bit of PR. Creates lots of local interest and then from all the entries, you've got a start of a mailing list.
