Hi!

We are planning to move: our website and blog (that is currently located on a subdomain) will soon be transferred to a new domain. But there's one tricky questions we can't find an answer to..

When moving a blog to a new domain, how can we transfer all likes/shares/retweets/G+s our posts and product pages have got over all this time. We have posts that collected over 1K RTs and product pages that have 400+ likes - so it would be too bad to lose them all while moving.

Search the Web for the solution but didn't manage to find anything that really works.

Thoughts?

You can't. The likes are linked to the domain name so you are going to lose the lot.

Think about it, if you could transfer them it would mean people could sell 'likes' and that just isn't going to happen.

Why are you moving to a new domain? Can't you just work with the current domain name?

All you can do is put in place some sort of redirect match. What server is it on Windows or Lamp?

If lamp then you can use mod-rewrite redirect match and 301 all the old urls to the new urls, that will transfer the visitor and the link juice. HOWEVER, many platforms are now treating redirects as failed links and will pull down the links.

Why are you changing domain? what is the main reason?

The problem with the FB likes and the such is the data is collected from facebook, if the requesting domain doesn't match then your likes = 0. Same with all the other stats.

Alas, there's no way around.

Even if in your case it is a valid request - think about the meaning of this action. if it were possible, people folks could just move likes from pages to other pages, from applications and from websites... Thus, if a user liked site A, you could replace it with site B thus causing confusion.

Perhaps if you contact Facebook (as a developer) they might be able to assist you with this issue, but there is no method that us (non Mark Zuckerberg types) can do.

If they're only there to provide social proof and beat the 'empty restaurant scenario' then just go to somewhere like fiverr and buy new ones. (sorry, someone had to say it :D)

Or be brave and remove the whole social media thing from your site. You may be surprised on how it improves user interaction.

Moving from one domain to another requires a lot of consideration. Apart from the issues highlighted in this thread, if you're moving from an aged domain to a brand new one, there are obvious negative connotations because Google prefers aged domains. A lot of the SEO work already done will also have been lost.

Last year a tour operator client of mine decided (before I was hired) to randomly move domain from a 12 year old domain which was ranking reasonably well to a new domain to better reflect their brand image. They lost a lot of their web leverage as a result.
