Hi Guys

In this thread, please post resources that help give you motivation. I'll start:

Tai Lopez of TaiLopez.com, look him up on YouTube. This guy is good for motivation and encourages self investment and learning. He also recommends reading more books, which is good advice!

More resources please.

Thanks

I would like to add something solid and of structure based on actual experience

If you require books videos or online motivation you need to question weather you should be doing this or not. Ask yourself do you have it in you to push on when the going looks bad
If you feel you need motivation from other medias then you would be better off getting a job

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with that. If you are serious about self employment then you need to work out how to motivate yourself, and that may mean seeking out sources of inspiration.

I pin my bank statement on the wall beside my PC, great motivational tool that is. :D I don't need cleverly worded stuff from so called business gurus and I sure don't need some patronising pillock telling me to do things their way and life will be wonderful, That's the main reason I got out of the rat race to work for myself. And if someone posts a quote from Richard Branson I swear I'll scream.

I think it's a bit more complicated than saying your goal should be your strongest motivator or simply pinning your bank statement on the wall, that is a method that is subjective, if it works for you.. great, it could even be an idea that may also inspire others. However, people turn to motivational 'Gurus' (I really hate that word especially when it is self professed) when maybe they do not have that someone to say something positive around them, that someone to say the words they want to hear to remind them to keep going when things look bleak. Some people have started out highly motivated without even reading a book or audio but over time things have not worked out and may have become depressed and they seek to get that motivation back.

Let's be honest a lot of motivational speakers out there are charlatans, they use carefully crafted words and tones, promises, blueprints, funnels, freebies and offers with some of the best marketing techniques you can find to lure you in to take as much money as they can from you, but it is a business and there is a demand for it and it works for some people and doesn't for others just like any other business.

I'll be honest I do not buy these things but I do wonder around youtube to watch and listen from time to time, some are good and some are just plain rubbish and as mentioned it is a 'Time Thief' but once again it's all subjective.

Sorry I could not answer the original question but I was compelled to respond with my opinion and it's my first post.. Yay!

I think it unfair to call him a scammer as stated on the quora website but what these guys are doing and it is rife out there is they are trying to get you to pay a monthly fee, they want the holy grail of business (recurring income) and they will do anything to keep you on that monthly fee. They go on the basis that most people sign up and forget... very much like gym memberships and they also make it very hard to get out of, some go as far as not to tell you that you will be paying a monthly fee in their sales pitch but it's there on the page in fine print.

They move in packs all recommending each other, cross-selling, up-selling and name dropping in their books and audios and sending out to each others list, if they don't get you one way they will get you the other way, hence why I just find what I need on youtube and I am good to go.

Let's remember though there are some really genuine motivators out there who don't do under handed tactics but probably not as well known or have gone past their sell by date.

I like a leaderboard up on a wall-mounted TV where I can see how I'm doing vs the rest of the team.

When it's me vs target, something similar, but more of a scorecard or bar chart of performance with a line crossing it that represents target.

Bottom line, the competition or name and shame aspect of targets vs actuals, or people vs people is what motivates me.

Oh, the other is a whiteboard where I put my weekly goals up in front of the world. As I move through the week, I tick/cross or put small numeric updates against each one so by Friday it's obvious whether I've made my plan happen, or be derailed into epic failure with a capital F.

I'm also one for weekly goals being checked off as I go along even if I fail with a capital F more of then then I like. Still make plenty of progress in the grand scheme of things so I guess it's all good.

For a more "online" type of resource check out www.mixergy.com. It's true the Internet can be a massive time thief but dipping in to the interviews here from time to time for me personally has helped give me a little kick start of motivation from time to time when things are a little flat. I'd say that's down to the interviewer's style and the way he get's some great insight from founders of very interesting companies. It's mostly tech focused but there's plenty to be learnt in there from people in all types of industries. Worth a look for sure.

Also I recently read Payoff by Dan Ariely which is definitely worth a read to understand motivation from a different perspective. It blends an academic approach with practical application quite well (in my opinion). You can find out more about the author on http://danariely.com/
