Money money money

Hey guys,

I've been talking a lot about money with my best mate, she's just started her Masters and is determined to come out with a job thats going to pay her a heck of a lot of money. That's cool that's her life choice and lord knows I want to be rich too. In fact its something that I want so much that I've stopped myself from worrying about it, afterall if I'm working towards it surely it'll come.

But is it all that serious? What are you willing to do for money and to strike it rich? For instance she's looking to get into investment banking, which DOES NOT suit her but her determination means she'll get into it (will leave within a year) but anything for the cash.

Would you be willing to settle for money rather than personal fulfillment? What have you learnt about money in your life?

The reason i started my own business was so i could pick my hours. I can live on very little money so its not that important to me, time however, is very important to me.

Personally i'd much rather have time than money, but like people say, time is money, which is true. Time is sod all use if you dont have any money to do something, so really the best i can hope for is a happy medium.

You'll find people that got rich say that what its given them is time to enjoy themselves.

time = money
money = time

If you have both, you've cracked it.

I agree with Dread...except I finally went part time in my first business, got bored and started a web business. :lol:

I don't want to be rich, just want enough so not to worry about bills etc. I was once given some advice..work now, play later. That is what i've done, except i'm use to working lots and find it hard to switch off now..God help me when I retire (not for some time yet, just in case you thought I was a wrinckly) :lol:

I agree with this. Having said that my health is more important to me than money, as I see it - If you've got your health you're as rich as you need to be.

Two things I've learnt:

1) £1,000,000 is not a lot of money. It's just an illusion because of all them zeros. An achievable sum many times over in a lifetime if you put in the effort.

2) Money is just a means to an end. No point having loads of money so you can spend all your time a) counting it, and b) making more.

Maybe you've heard the following story:

A man is alone with a woman in a railway carriage. The two have not met before. Suddenly, the man leans over and asks the woman a question: "Would you sleep with me tonight for a million pounds?" She thinks for a moment and then replies, "Yes". A few minutes later, the man asks another question: "Would you sleep with me tonight for five pounds?" The woman glares at him: "Sleep with you for five pounds? What kind of woman do you think I am?" He responds: "I thought we'd already determined that. Now we're just haggling over the price."

This story has its serious side. We each claim to have principles and ideals, but are we willing to jettison those principles for large sums of money? My advice to your friend would be to put her principles and ideals in writing, those things over which she will never compromise. If she can achieve her monetary goals without violating those principles, she will not spend time later regretting her actions.

Dont know "how far" I would go for money as I have never been put in a situation to judge and secondly as the above story shows, people do change when the money is on the table.

The majority of my team at work have come from consultancy backgrounds where they were putting in stupidly long hours (cutting down on expenditure as their company was paying for breakfast, lunch, dinner and often transport home/hotel almost every night) but made very large sums of money and most is saved as they didnt have time to spend it.

With the experience they have had after 2-3 years of doing this has enabled them to get into our team as a senior manager which is a little less money but much more sociable hours.

Would consider doing something like it myself because there is a definative end point and you know where your going with it.

The reason I want to setup my own business has nothing to with money, I want to be able to offer employment and do my own thing. I want my own working hours and my own location.

I have had dreams about making a ton of money since i was a a youth. Thr one thing i would have done for happiness was to be a scientist. in actual fact i wanted to be an astronomer. i ended up a chemist! don;t ask

Then after having wandered for a few years, and drifting from pillar to post, i decided up IT. Then after several jobs landed in rednundancy again.
I leanred from this that the best way forward to to do things for myself. And as i explained in another thread it is the kind of life i now want to lead.

As for what drives me, i guess it is a hatred for poverty, and being a loser. Plus the fear of growing old with no assetts or pension.

One night i could not sleep so i asked what was the main goal with this business, what did i want from it. Is it to get rich, or just to survive?
I decided on the latter, if the former comes with it then so much the better.
The most important thing for me in my life is my wife (i have no kids). Everything else is second.
I guess i decided to work to live not live to work. i run the business i do because i see it as fun and i enjoy it, making money is a bonus.
Of course making money is what we do it for we need money, but if there is enough for food on the table, and a roof over our heads. along with some left over to enjoy life. If i can set this as my goal and work for riches later if it is within my grasp, then so be it.

I guess what i am trying to say in my long winded fashion is, as long as you are happy, what does it matter?
