Has anyone got any figures on the improvement (or not) of entering custom meta titles and descriptions as against letting Google do its own thing?

Thanks.

Improvements in the rate of visitors clicking on your search engine listings.

The Nr.1 most important element is PAGE TITLE!

A good Page Title can attract as high as 50% and even more CTR from search, even if it's not in first position. So concentrate on page titles first.

For better search engine ranking Meta information plays great role. There are only three important points we have to cover to get good rankings,
first one is Title which is very important because it represent your listing on the search engine. The second one is meta description comes after the title on the search results and last thing is meta keywords which is very useful to tell the search engine about your niche and services.

All these points are very important and if we care about these points then definitely Google will take care of our website.

Meta title and description are definitely very important. Design them carefully. Google has told you how to arrange the content. Just Check the Google SEO guideline.

Google doesn't use meta information (description and keywords) as a ranking signal. You can leave Google to use your content as your meta description but you'd be better off writing your own compelling descriptions.

Meta descriptions are there to tempt searchers to click your listing within search engine result pages...write compelling ones and you'll find more people click your listing and visit your site.

Rankings are useless without good meta descriptions designed to encourage clicks.
