Marketing partner or is there such a thing?

Hi,
I'm starting an exciting (imho) new business in the automotive industry. This is big in the US but just emerging over here.

I'm happy to be the hands on guy doing the work for now until the business is busy enough for employees, but the business needs someone to market/promote it, as I seem pretty useless at that.

Is there such a thing as a partner in the business who does that side of things in exchange for a profit split? Maybe part time / on the side until things kick off?

This is a regional service like, say garage services for example.
Happy to provide details in a pm, just throwing the feelers out for viability...

Consider important question, who will pay marketing expenses.

From my expierence, I always had hard time, when I tried to make deals, paying one or another form, based on results. But when you make such a deal, with good provider, usually it last a lot, and generates good profit for both parties.

Certainly can be. It's your business, so you make it however you want.

There's a big risk in a startup. So you'd have to convince a marketer that the business is viable and the risk worth the reward (obviously)...

No business is successful without marketing but marketing manager is expensive one that is why you are thinking of a partner . In this way you have to pay only if there is a profit. Its hard to look for one but if you find one convincing is all it takes as Terry says.
Good Luck.

Thanks guys.
My thoughts were to have someone on board to push it for a commission or % of sales...someone to partner with rather than pay as an employee.

At least I guess I know it can be done!

it's not worth giving someone a share of your business purely because they offer a skill that you can easily pay for.

Suppose the person provides £9000 of value (equivalent of 3 months of a junior marketing manager salary)

Is that £9000 value worth giving someone 25% of a potential £250000 business?

If the business becomes successful and you agree on an equity deal you will never forgive yourself for it.

If you beleive your business is going to be a success, raise the money to pay for a marketing consultant.

50% of something is better than 100% of nothing...

If you beleive your business is going to be a success, raise the money to pay for a marketing consultant.
And to raise that money you will likely have to give away a portion of your business to investors who won't be offering any marketing skills...

And then you have to find a marketing consultant who knows what they're doing...

I would only give a percentage of my business to anyone if I needed them on the long run.
Marketing is typically this kind of thing. You need it to start the business and to lift it up and, once it is running nicely, you will still need it to keep running and accelerating (talking about cars).
So, if I were you, I would consider the % share with someone. I hope you can find a good partner.

I personally think it would be difficult to get a person on board to do your marketing for a possible percentage of your business.

You may be better off getting your website built or an advert placed on car forums/EBay and get your own business marketed and not give away a portion of your business as you could regret it in future.

I have someone very close to me who deals in high end classic car restoration. PM me if you want to share what you want to do and I may be able to point you in the right direction.

Kind regards

Barbara

Well you have a big problem, as a business simply isn't a business without sales. This is most critical.

You are either going to have to share your business or pay for expertise. (or learn yourself).

My gut feel, is a business is stronger where you have several equity partners than one owner and 'sub contractors'.

How you find a suitable equity partner that is prepared to work with you on your vision is a different matter (and one where I can offer no advice)

I think there are new marketing businesses coming up all the time. The OP will be able to find at least one that looks promising and will be able to establish the mutual benefit factor meaning they both are starting out so they both believe in each-other and therefore the marketing partner will take on the business in an equity share scenario.
I believe this could work.

You are the capitalist and you need a marketing specialist for your automotive business. There is a process to take in order to make your business achieve its goal and that process will be discuss first and set objectives as well as analysis in the competition.

Choose a partner that makes sense to your business and to the consumer. There should be a synergy and balance in a relationship between two very different brands that consumers identify with. In order for it to work, it must be a win-win-win relationship for the consumer and both companies. For a strategic partnership to work.
