Dear Forum Members,

we are looking for webhosting for our Client in UK / London preferred
Not interested in VPS just webspace with some e-mail addresses, php & MySQL and htaccess availability, Cpanel (self-)management
Some important factors and properties:
- reliable
- not too many websites on same IP
other:
- speed
- price

What service provider do you recommend? Please explain your reasons!

Thank You
Chill

I use and recommend Vidahost, based in Slough with their own custom built datacentre with 24/7 UK support.

Used them now for around 4 years with in excess of 500 sites and can only remember one instance of down time (old datacentre caught fire).

I cant recommend people (as it would be us - and that not allowed) but I will say stick away from the cheaps - which include Go Daddy and 123 Reg.

There are so many hosts around, generally go for a small to med size, UK based with UK Support.
I've never heard anything bad about VidaHost, So they would seem a good bet. It also depends on your budget and purpose for hosting, as if you're hosting a magento site for example, you may be better at looking at servers that have a better configuration for magento.

Magento = Dedicated. CWCS are good for higher tier, without the Rackspace price tag
Magneto doesn't have to be dedicated, it can be run on Shared (if only shared with a couple of sites) Pretty well, if the right config is done, i.e Nginx, Varnish ect

If you need Magento, you are running a big site.
If your not running a big site, you don't need Magento.

If your running a big site, you should have decent server behind it - which will cope with traffic spikes.

Whilst i fully agree, we both know... people selling 1 item a week, still feel the need to run magento. Which is pointless, and even for huge sites, its not in my eyes the best piece of open source software anyway. However a VPS could handle traffic spikes, i know for a company processing plenty of orders per day, running Magento on a VPS (not the best spec) and the site load time is under 3 seconds at all times, and the server load is generally under 1.00

Vidahost are good and still offer Cpanel as a legacy product, as most of their hosting is cloud based now, not on Cpanel.
Your spec does bring to mind the old saying: "You can have it good, you can have it fast, you can have it cheap. Choose any two of the above."

What is the amount of storage and bandwidth do you need?

And what would be your budget?

Hello,
for the questions:
What we know and public has been shared, I do neither know the traffic (assume an average site) nor the budget (practically this depends on the service level provided).
We do not need multiple IPs and shared service seems OK.
Thanks,

PS Positives about Vidahost looks promising; thank you for suggesting

Carry on :)

Hi Chill,

Again, we're obviously biased but the level of service you'll get from a medium sized UK host is arguably far better than the very large, obvious names.
You'll also likely satisfy your requirement of not having too many sites hosted on the same IP address, as it's the very large hosts that tend to overcrowd servers.

And a medium sized host will also have the infrastructure in place to provide a reliable service, which may not be the case with single server designers and smaller hosts.

If speed is important you may want to look for a host that provides a web server above standard Apache, such as Nginx already mentioned, or LiteSpeed which we run.

What Nuno said is generally true, although there are some exceptions; some hosts simply charge a lot more for the same, and others like us are social enterprises so aren't looking to charge more to provide higher profit levels.

I hope that helps.

Good luck!

Dan

Have you through about getting your own dedicated ip address?
That way you would not be sharing it with other users on that server.

Ignore any "Unlimited" providers, they may sound attractive but will cause you far to much hassle.
