Hi,

We are a UK non-profit currently operating a lead management website built on PHP and MySQL. We're looking for a developer who can rebuild and host a new version of this site, addressing some current issues and improving overall functionality.

The site is essentially a database-driven platform for managing leads and processing orders. We have an existing system as a reference, and the main hiccup is that our email functionality needs fixing. We're hoping to find someone who can deliver a reliable, hosted solution. If you have the skills and are interested in supporting a non-profit, please get in touch with your quotes or any questions.

Thank you!

James

Does it have to be PHP and MySQL? If doing a new version its a good opportunity to consider your platform. Nothing wrong with PHP per se but IMO PHP frameworks are not the best for very custom software.

Have you considered just fixing the email functionality? I tend to think its better not to fix anything that works.

I would generally advise people NOT to let the developer host. Get the developer to set up the hosting, maybe even manage it, but pay for hosting separately and ensure you have access to the code. It makes you a lot less dependent on a single supplier.

    Hi James,

While we don't offer coding I do have a talented close friend of the family that has just completed their Computer Science degree that may be able to help. They have been working on a personal project for me and this could be good for their experience too.

If the email issues are not coding related, we (as a company) can help with that separately too.

If that's of interest please feel free to pm me.

    Many thanks,
    Abe

    Hi James

I'd be keen to have a chat to talk in more detail about your requirements. I have over 16 years experience with PHP/MySQL platforms. If you'd like to set up a call please PM me your contact details and a time that is convenient to chat.

    Kind Regards

    Dean Ainsworth

Don't bother. Will only give you an invoice and run off with your money without providing the service.

Yikes, sounds like a story there!

    Paul.

Dean completed our e-commerce site - really pleased with the outcome and he did a grand job considering the bland, boring product. From the initial call he "got" what we was after. A lot of freedom and was able to lead the works. Of course, tweaks and changes were requested. Final part of the puzzle was to get a proper logo designed via Dean's graphic designer contacts (current one was just a cheap £25 from fiverr or somewhere!) which a further invoice was paid, but unfortunately nothing ever materialised and calls, texts and emails have gone unanswered, despite "hopefully should have something to show by the end of the week" type messages since mid-August. Even blocked on here now after my message above. Refund requested, as the time for actually having it created is past now and still silence... It is what it is.

Shoe would be on the other foot if he completed all works and I didn't pay.... Rightly, be annoyed.

So you paid for an ecommerce site and he did a great job? Did it go live?

But there was just a logo to do which you paid for and never arrived and he cut contact?

How strange, because presumably the logo was pretty cheap compared to the build?

Yes, and yes. Website is working. Although on his reseller hosting, so he can put a close and stop to that at any point too!

Extra work on logo design whether that's contracted out further, whatever. The point is money has changed hand whether large or small which should taken into account the cost from the graphic designer and also Mr Dean's time to go through. No problem with that, but now nothing has happened. This is on-going since mid August. The fact that contact has been cut and no logo nor refund is seen is the frustration. (And no I don't want him to use fiverr or upworks or whatever the latest fad is, because I've already done that and got lack of quality for a low price). He has the contacts through his own work and experience and that's the expectation of quality to come through.
A refund of money is the only outcome being sought now, which is unlikely with an internet shyster.

Does seem like the best option at this point but it probably wasn't much compared the the site cost?

Anyway feel free to get in touch if you'd like us to take a look at getting it off his reseller hosting.

    Paul.

Oh no. I think this calls for a reminder that anyone seeking a software solution should apply the same principles as if someone was building a physical product for you, i.e. you as the client must own the intellectual property and it must be clearly described as such in the contract. On top of this (and I know this might add complexity for some) but all source code should reside in the client's VCS system, may that be GitHub or Bitbucket. I know this is getting technical, but all code commits should be made straight to the VCS and any solution should be deployable anywhere. Well, if anyone feels a little article would help on this, let me know. I don't mind putting something together as I see lots of businesses suffer because they've relied on a vendor or freelancer to perform duties that a CTO or Head of Engineering would perform.
