Link Building - Weak Spot

Hi everyone

I'm now looking to generalise my site then expand into different domains etc

I know how to do the basics - I write articles and content for seo purposes, know how to research kw's, market and the usual - basics really, scoring 9/10 for short-term seo (always room for improvement!)

I have a weak spot...

So, I want to carry out long-term seo. Adwords - check; Writing - check; Submitting to se's & directories - check;

Can I ask the experts, what's next for long-term - the competition is well known nationally so I can't approach them for backlinks, they'll just never do it.

I really am up for advice and thank all of you for any tips however small

Links may be obtained from the big players in your industry, it's worth a try.
Some ideas to get you going;

• Blog comments (not spammy ones though)
• Link baiting (creating content on your site that people will naturally link to, such as an opinionated article)
• Social bookmarks/social media sites (stumbleupon is very good)
• Search for Your keyword + "submit link" (play around with the submit link part, try add url, suggest site etc)
• Creating small info only sites in areas your business is in, with back links to your main sites
• Add a blog, with a link back to your site
• Groups, and other 3rd party hosed sites, like squiddo
• Aproach site owners and offer to write an article for them, obviously with a back link (sending you a PM about this one)

Good question, one I was thinking of asking, LC stumbleupon looks interesting, is there not something about rating your own site? or have I got the wrong idea?

Yep, stumbleupon is very good. I use social bookmarking through these types of site and find them great for getting new sites/sections of a site indexed very quickly.

Some of the benifits are;
You get deep links to inner pages of a site
you can make use of anchor text
You get actual, targetted visitors to the site from direct clicks
The Search Engine Spiders crawl all over social media sites due to the frequency of updates. So you get the search engines coming through these links and crawling all over your site

We use Digg in exactly the same way. It's not uncommon to have a new page indexed within a couple of hours.

Yes I've seen this. I'm also seeing my own blog indexed very quickly. Posted at the weekend and the post was indexed on Google within 8 minutes!

Mark-UK, yeah, you can submit articles to digg with backlinks to your site (doesn't have to be a blog) more here.
Try putting a digg button on the top left and bottom right of the article as it is on the web page, and ask people to 'Digg it'. The more diggs a piece of content/page gets, the higher up it goes on digg. A good article on the front page of digg can cause enough traffic to crash servers very quickly, so if this is somthing you are going to do regularly, ensure your hosting is up to it....
Also, especially with Digg, the content also gets spread around through the various clones on Digg, and other social tagging sites, increasing the amount of backlinks you can get.
The trick is getting the titles right to get the really god traffic. If you watch what sort of thing hits the front page for a week or two, you will see what I mean.

Just a quick mention. Google is going after paid links. so unless the source of the link is good and relevant it could have a negative effect.
Links are better when in content that has the keyword that you want to target.
The most important factor that no one has mentioned is internal linking.
All top SEO companies are going down this route.

Firstly, you need about 150 diggs in a short people of time, which no one every seems to really know but who all claim less than 24 hours!

Secondly, digg users can be a pain in the neck - through research i know front pagers who say digg visitors dont buy, dont go to any other pages, and are quick to leave very *****y comments.

Thirdly, the key aspect of digg is that people often use the front page as a guide to what to blog about, so the main benefit can often be the back links generated.

Thanks, yes I know what you mean and will not be paying anyone. Rather, returning favours as I can write seo articles etc

Thanks for this, internal linking is something I've looked at and am well on the way to doing. Just wish there was someone to check these things and not charge me an arm and leg!

Thanks Guy, I've no experiene of Digg other than knowing how to add the icon so that gives me other considerations.

You might look at starting some solid content sites in your area and use those to promote your business, depends on what you are selling obviously but here is an example..

So if you are selling waterbeds in the UK you might start a small content site aimed at some low volume keyword groups such as most comfortable bed and so on, just make sure the content is useful to visitors.

Or my personal favorite, start a forum or review site of beds and build a site that lets people leave user reviews and talk about them. Or get more niche and do a site about how waterbeds help people with bad backs...

In link building some areas may go wrong specially in bookmarking or posting blogs, even with good intention you can be mark as a spammer.

Try writing content that references and links to popular bloggers in your niche (preferably saying how great they are). 90% of the time they will pick up on the link and come and check you out, making them aware of your site and brand. If they like what they see they may return, and one day might write about your site, providing a good, relevant link to you as they do.

Alternatively you could just bribe them with freebies, asking them to review whatever you send, including a link back in the review.
