Mrs. Robertson, an eighty year-old widow, visits her solicitors to make a small adjustment to her will. She has been a client of the firm for more than fifty years, and the senior solicitor who looks after her affairs rapidly notes her instructions and promises to get the job done straight away. The client reaches into her bag and takes out a small container. "I have just brought along a couple of my home made cakes. I hope you like them. One other thing; to save trouble, let me settle your bill now, rather than waiting for you to send it in". "Well thank you" says the lawyer. "As an old client, shall we call it fifty pounds?"

The old lady handed over a fifty pound note, and prepared to leave.

Later, the lawyer was about to put the note into his wallet (such a small sum being too trivial to trouble the tax authorities with) when he noted that he had been given two new fifty pound notes that were stuck together.

So here is the ethical dilemma he faced:-

Should I tell my partners?

Like it! So true though.

And from the same blogsite that joke came from, (internet hat tip linky thing), in the comments:

It's not a well known fact that heaven and hell are next to each other and separated by a fence. One day both God and Satan find the fence is in need of repair and they argue over whose responsibility it is to make the repairs.

So God says they must settle the matter via their lawyers.

Satan asks God where he's going to get a lawyer.

Is the window now open for all the bad lawyer jokes?

A man with a dodgy ticker is taken to the hospital and told his options for a heart transplant.

We have one from a 21 year old olympic athelete who was hit by a bus. His is £10,000. Another is from this swimmer, 18 years old, non-drinker, non-smoker. It is £20,000. And this one is from a 63 year old lawyer who drank like a fish & smoked like chimney. His is £500k.

"Why is the lawyers so expensive?" asks the man. "Never been used" replies the quack.

The Government issued advice on clearing ice and snow or not clearing ice and snow with regards to whether someone would have a successful claim should the slip and fall on an area that had previously been cleared.

The advice was that it would be extremely unlikely that someone would be able to claim if they fell and that people should clear away snow and ice as they see fit - providing they do it responsibly - i.e dont make it worse by for example throwing down a load of hot water which will inevitably re-freeze making the area even slippier.

Further to this, if you are a business owner you have a duty of care to your customers to provide them safe access to your premises. It isnt enough to pretend that you didnt know it was slippery outside and therefore didnt know there was a slip hazard.

Further information can be seen on the 'Carrick Salt' website for more Government advice on clearing snow and your legal obligations.

Law schmaw. It's just a good principle for life in general:

"If you're trying to fix something, don't leave it in a worse state than before you messed around with it."

Relationships, cars, PCs or snowy paths. If know nowt, then leave be!
