Just tried to do some keyword research for a new Australian site using the old favourite 'google keyword tool' and it has all changed and I can't get my head round it.

Can anyone recommend a decent tool for checking search quantity in selected areas please?

Have you tried Moz's keyword difficulty tool? Not sure if that is exactly what you want. But, it is a good tool to incorporate in keyword research.

What's causing difficulty with the Google keyword tool? For Adwords it's brilliant as it will sort into keyword themes for you - making it much easier to generate a keyword list quicker. Plus, with search estimates (albeit not that accurate) you get an idea of what is more important to focus on.

use google and bing, you can safe them as txt file easily!
certainly try different methods, I played round a couple weeks (not every day) and so you basically improve your keywords,... I guess you be aware of the game ,-)

Well ... I think for keyword research Google Adword tool is best but you need something different then you have to pay for it because most of the tools are paid and didn't produce the best results.

We will need to understand a very important concept here.
There's a BIG difference between "keywords" and "markets".

To find markets you need to know what people search for and buy. This is what we call “customer groups”. This is the first step and keywords come after that.

A lot of people get it backwards and pick keywords first...and wind up at #1 but can't make any money.

This is a done-that-been-there case.

What most keyword research tools are doing these days is giving you a huge keyword list which is almost as good as GKT...It contains all sorts irrelevant keywords that will probably do me no good in my niche.

I was introduced to “Keyword Country” by a friend and I must say this is one tool that beats everyone else. It gives you a list of expandable keyword groups. Those can be micro niches for you to plan PPC and content campaigns around. The results have been just terrific, a sample given below (for the EXACT set of keywords. My niche: dog training)

Suggest you use Google Trends.
This tool allows you to search worldwide, or just in Australia if you wish.
You can search for past 6 years, or past 12 months.
You can enter up to 5 words or phrases to compare.
It uses Google's own database, and I've found it a very enlightening and extremely helpful tool.
