Is SEO all about Google?

I have reached a point were i believe all the seo work we do is for success in google
I know some marketers out there will disagree with me and say yahoo and bing are important but i have to say i now ignore yahoo and bing for maximum exposure in google.

Let me know what you think

Pretty much yeah. Google has such a dominant share of the search market that you'd be daft not to.
In a lot of cases prominence is Google is also mirrored by prominence in Yahoo anyway.
Paid search is a little different though. This seems to be spreading out over Google, MSN and Yahoo.

It's all about the big G for me. Nobody ever suggested I go and "Yahoo X" or "Bing Y"... Googling is what people do and for as long as Google has that brand power I'll be focusing my optimisation efforts there.

I'm also pretty convinced that if your website is well optimised for Google it will perform well in other search engines.

It depends how you are doing it. If you are running an SEO campaign that is all about Google, then SEO is all about Google. However, if you are running a web promotion campaign that incorporates Google then SEO is not all about Google. You can hit two birds with one stone. Get some traffic from Google and get traffic from other sites at the time. When you are specifically targeting Google, you only tend to generate traffic from Google. This can be quite dangerous, as if you rely on Google and that source of traffic dries up it can be a big loss.

SEO is as much about understanding your target market as which search engine to optimise for.

If your website is technically optimised, i.e. coded to be as search engine friendly as it can be, then it's all about the search terms your prospective customers are using to look for your products.

Obviously, this is now to do with browser/buyer behaviour and variations on the words used in ANY search engine.

Ultimately, search engines deliver returns based on the words they've indexed that match as relevantly as they can the words typed in by the searcher.

In summary, it's more important to optimise for your marketplace than any specific search engine.

We have tended to think 'Google' in most of our consideration of SEO compatability mainly because its the logical and most sensible thing to do - especially as it is the most popular search engine used.

However, like us, most people probably take those requirements and expand them into thinking about the bigger picture - yahoo etc too.

Basically, if you can conquer Google then there is every chance you will be taken seriously by your customers too.

A well designed and properly created site that is trying to impress search engines with its superb content will impress all interested search engines... not just Google.

SEO in itself holds many arguments - even whether or not there is any point in really working on the natural listings at all is one argument that certainly holds true for some (but not many) businesses.. and PPC is all important for others at any cost.. and again, the most successful PPC is also Google...
I have spoken to people that have spent a fortume with SEO companies to no avail... and those that will only ever spend on PPC and vice-versa... but Google is always high up in the conversation of SEO aren't they?

You just have to decide what is most important for your particular business within the time-frame allowed and budget available... but Google almost always figures in that somewhere.

- so, it seems.. they probably are 'all that' in many ways :)

Google has to be the one for us. They are the market leader and if you ask all your friends and family what they use to search the net I would think most would say Google.

I would still use the others for some advertising and SEO, however focus most of your time on Google.
