Hi,

I have a new start up where I am importing packaging products such as Kraft Paper, Greaseproof Paper, Silicone Coated Paper, etc from Asia to customers here in the UK. However, I noticed that the customers in UK are not really keen to get these products from the ports themselves and are requesting smaller quantities to be delivered to their warehouses. Has anyone with similar businesses have faced this challenge? Is anyone able to advise what kind of costs am I looking to have my own warehouse here in the UK? Looking for some feedback and recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Don't start with your own warehouse unless you have good funds and an established client base.

Start with 3PL to build and then consider investing.

    What quantities do they want?

Are you importing each order separately, or importing one large order and splitting?

Hi, I am importing large order and trying to split but sometimes this is not a viable option. Hence, want to understand how businesses in UK import packaging products from abroad and how they manage with customers requesting small volumes.

If you are splitting, you will either need to do it yourself or get a fulfilment company to do it for you, plus storage and dispatch. Customers aren't going to want to turn up at a port, dig out what they want from the container and take it away - nor is it practical for them to do so.

I'm confused what the issue is. First you say they "don't want to get it from the port themselves" - in which case offer them a DDP price and you do the customs clearance and arrange delivery to door.

But then you say "they want smaller quantities from UK warehouse" - is this because they can't meet the factory MOQ? Or do they want faster lead times?

The solution will depend on the specifics of the actual problem.

My problem was to understand how businesses are managing with multiple customers requiring smaller volumes and not meeting the factory MOQ and if they recommend setting up my own warehouse would resolve this issue. But I have got my answer now to go with a 3PL solution provider. :)

I am still new and learning and looking forward for some good advise and recommendations from this fantastic business community. Thank you for your understanding. :)
