How much time would I need to move to hosted exchange server

if I wanted to set up hosted exchange server for 8 people who are used to using outlook at a basic level how much time should I allow and where might it all go - with myself only doing the bits that i could not outsource on the set up side

How many emails do you have for each person? It really depends on how many emails / attachments are being transfered.

You will have to take a backup of your current emails (into a PST) and then open up your exchange mailbox once it is complete and put all of the emails into there.

I think for 8 computers it should only be a couple of hours work to change the settings, configure it all on the server end.

That isn't including waiting for DNS for your Mail Records to update though.

Functionality won't really change for the users, if anything it will get better

Agree with Smarter Web design, depends on size of your current mailboxes etc. When we have done migrations for 10 users with under a GB per user it didnt take any more than a couple of hours. As also mentioned, the DNS side could take a few hours more.

Hosted exchange is the way to go, we are seeing more and more users move over to it.

I would also suggest you looked at Google Apps.

Apart from the fact that it's cheaper and offers the same functionality as hosted Exchange, one of its major features is that once set up you can automatically import/upload old emails from PST/OST files.
