Hello, Just been thrown by a rates bill. I receive Small Business Relief as ratable value is only £5000. As I understand it you get 100% relief till September 2011. I have received a bill for £532.20 this morning but on checking the details its for 01/10/2011 till 01/01/2012! Do I have to pay this now? How far in advance are you supposed to pay your rates?

Thanks. I'm not worried. I want to know what is a reasonable time to pay your rates in advance? The money is better in my bank account for 6 months than the councils.

Depending on the amount, i would pay quaterly or monthly in advance, for £500+ I would pay quarterly.

No, you don't have to pay now as mention, you have are paid up to Sep 11.
All Councils issue their bills this time of year hence you getting yours now.
You should be geting 50% relief on this bill, make sure it is there.

We pay our business rates two years' in arrears but would not recommend it as a general plan ;)
