Help my website is down

My website is down and I have contacted the domain people they said to Contact the server provider which I have done but they said they have contacted the person who built the website. I own the business but the server people dont have me as a registered person they won't tell me who is the contact they are trying as they have not had a response from them. My website has Been down for 1 month now. I cant remember who built it as this was many years ago Any advice is welcomed.

You have to assume that the website and hosting may no longer exist, certainly the primary reason for it going offline could be account closure or lack of payment from whomever was hosting it.

Alternatively if their server hosting has a problem and they are non-responsive / AWOL then they clearly are not interested in providing support and may even have exited the industry.

Even if you do manage to establish contact, how can you have any confidence in the continuity of the site moving forward?

With marketing budgets being canned during much of the past two years, we’ve seen several instances of smaller web/hosting shops that have disappeared while leaving websites offline or hosting terminated.

It sounds like you have control over the domain which is helpful. Suggestion would probably be to cut your losses and find an alternative website and hosting provider. I know that there are quite a few web development / hosting provider types right here on this forum who im sure can help with all that.

Do you have any backups of the website at all and even the website itself when the designer finished it or was everything delivered to their web hosting leaving you with no ownership/control of it?

I'm hoping that you have a backup of the website...

Sadly, this is worryingly common. We get approx 3 to 4 calls a week with this exact problem and the only thing we can hope is that you have a backup of the website at all?

We have been able to help people make some progress but getting back the entire website without a backup is sadly 100% in the hands of the designers' hosting company, which all of those oversold corporates will just not be interested in helping with.

Sadly Wesh.uk is right, this is starting to become more common problem. I recently had a customer come to me, as they wanted me to provide their phone system, but also as it turned out, one of the big name providers had stopped providing domain names and website hosting, and so their domain name was taken over by someone in another country.

I provided them with a new domain name and web/email hosting. Luckily they managed to get in touch with whoever did their original website and get them to put it on the new hosting platform.

If you can prove purchase of the domain name and the package contents you may find that the hosting company will be able to assist with moving this into your possession, it does depend on the company in question, but if you have an invoice for the web hosting or the domain they may be able to help.

If the worst does come to the worst and you cannot get it back, you may be able to build a new site using the content using the way way back machine -

Wayback Machine

archive.org

This would let you view your website as it was in the past and then grab the content.

Sometimes I am also found some forum sites down, and there are notifications in the browser that can't find the server, maybe the server has down, or the URL site can be found at the server.
