HELP - Advice Needed About Staff Taking The P##s

Hi guys, one of my staff has emailed the office this morning with the following email.

"Morning all. Unfortunately my cat has been running around all morning and night. Destroying all in his wake. I'm going to try and get some extra sleep and be in for 1pm, as right now I'm too tired to function.

At the moment I'm rather annoyed and just wondering what others would do in this situation.

Tell them not to come in and take it as a day's annual leave. Then give them a bollocking tomorrow.

This is just taking the piss, but it’s important to deal with this properly, not just a talking to when they get in (today or tomorrow).


The first thing is that they’re absent without authorisation, which should be a disciplinary matter. The manner in which they decided, not to request leave but to state it was being taken – an email, rather than a phone call to discuss their position – should also be something taken up with them... formally.


It’s quite normal to want to deal with this informally, a stern word when they do attend, but a formal warning will ensure they put the cat out in future, and if they really need to take some time-off at short notice, have the courtesy to request this & discuss it with you, rather than tell you what’s what.

And if your policies aren't clear about reporting any absence by telephone, not email, you should get that addressed too Dale - you need to speak with staff whenever they're not coming in.
