What an excellent, useful posting - I hope many people get to look through this in detail, and have a lot of questions answered, straight from the horses mouth, as it were.

Also interesting to see what google has to say about social media at the end - it is the future you know!

Save this and send it to young start ups - they'll love the advice.

That's a good guide. Already noted quite a few inconsistencies with previous google advice so I'm off to ask a few questions.

JustOneUK - totally agree about the URL, but you notice they don't actually tell you that the advice will improve your ranking, all they say is:

which is somewhat different to saying:

...following the best practices outlined below will make it easier for search engines to both crawl and index your content and may improve your ranking.

They make very little comment on inbound links, in fact the only real mention is of something to avoid:

Avoid:
• spamming link requests out to all sites related to your topic area
• purchasing links from another site with the aim of getting PageRank instead of traffic

Still, some good stuff in there, if everyone followed the advice the quality of the SERPS would really improve.

And that is what Google is after. The more relevant the search, the more popular it becomes among users. That will help Google to stay at the top.

Also think about it, if we all have analytics, Google already has tonnes of info about our site!

Forget bigbrother! Google is the allmight, allpowerfull one!

Of course there's a hidden agenda. Google knows that releasing anything will cause a stir and get posted all over the place.

Google is pushing people to sign up their business for local listings, they WANT people to rely on them to get business and then (eventually) once they have them by the short and curlies they'll slap a charge on them or force them to sign up for adwords. Yellow pages makes something ridiculous like £2,000,000,000+ worldwide, and that's a £2 billion/year piece of the market that Google want to control, eventually.
