Theres a place in Bude, Cornwall called computers for charity, they fix them up and send them to people who canot afford them

If you're in (or around) the North West I'd recommend Tier1, based just outside Manchester.

I used to work in IT and used them a fair bit.

If you still have stuff to dispose of I'd recommend Tier1 in Manchester. I'm pretty sure they arrange collection as well.

I used to work in the IT industry (albeit as a reseller) and used them on many occasions.

keep hard disk at home. it is really hard to completely delete all info and you also know that you can get hold of something very old. 20 years of hard disks dont fill a drawer.

True you should keep the hard disk if there's anything on the computer that's confidential, but the WEE directives state that it is the responsibility of the retailer, when buying any new electrical equipment, to dispose of the thing it replaces, if the customer so wishes.

If the customer wishes to entrust their secrets to a bunch of low paid guys at dixons, they have a right to do so....But they are bloody idiots if they do.

I dont think that there is anything in the directive to stop the bits being recycled. In fact it is recomended.
