We recently launched a flooring & carpet uplift/removal company based in the North West (at present covering St.Helens, Bolton, Wigan, Warrington, Liverpool etc..) The majority of flooring we remove is recycled and are fully committed to minimising the impact on the environment.

We look forward to building new relationships with local business and offering a better, cost-effective alternative to skip hire and landfill.

Congratulations on your new business. You should do well, its a bit of a gift from a marketing perspective.

Good idea for a new business and I just wondered how much carpet you manage to recycle and where is it recycled. I can understand though if you don't want to put details on here.

Hello Alan, we use local recycling firms in most cases, certain items we are able to professionally clean and make use of (we clean carpets too)
Waste is chopped up and disposed of.

Thanks for the information and now need to find a recycling firm which takes this type of product.

I have just started cleaning carpets and looking for another opportunity to run along side.

The good thing about carpet removal is it can be done by anyone with a van and a waste transfer ticket, and wont even cost anything to advertise. Certainly a good sideline for anyone looking to boost their income.

Hi, just wondered why you do not need to advertise which would be great and save money but how would people find out about out service?

The carpets we clean are the good ones!

Most small service based businesses don't need to advertise if they get their marketing right. Advertising is the most expensive and least effective form of marketing.

Hi Stretchy,

I know you are the marketing expert on this site but just wondered how you could market a business like this and gain customers without actually advertising which as you say is expensive.

There are loads of ways. The most obvious with this business would be to build relationships with local carpet shops and get them to recommend your services to anyone who buys a carpet. You can do the same with carpet fitters, plumbers who deal with emergencies and floods, and loads of other associated trades. There are hundreds of ways to get work for trades businesses without spending a penny, but you get the idea.

This works particularly well for waste removal as trades hate removing rubbish.

You need to know how to build these relationships for maximum effect, but its not rocket science.

Advertising is not expensive if you get a good response. Its a bit naive to dismiss advertising.

Building relationships combined with advertising combined with as many other channels it takes to reach your customers is a more sensible route. Like I said its only expensive if its done incorrectly.

Yes you can build up a business just through word of mouth and networking but this will take a long time. Advertising can get the ball rolling.

Also, most people have to spend their days actually doing the work they offer to people, advertising can be working on making people aware of your service while your getting on with managing the business.

Advertising is not needed for a business like this.

Why waste money on advertising if you can get more work than you need through methods which cost nothing. They cost a small amount of your time, but no more than arranging the advertising.

Thanks for the information as I can see what you are saying regarding approaching other trades who as you say hate removing rubbish.

I also think you need to advertise to get things moving and to inform members of the public the service you are offering as I think this maybe could where quite a considerable amount of your work comes from.

Just need a find a recycling company who deal with carpet and flooring waste!

Strategic alliances will work immediately. Advertising takes a while to generate a return. The examples I gave were only very basic examples. Anyone who does this well will always outperform businesses who advertise.

My apologies for a late response I have been away.

We have done very little marketing to date, a handful of emails to local business and handing out business cards. We have been in contact with Carpet Recycling UK and received positive feedback.

People contact us through our website form generally.

Today we had signage put on our van and it looks great.

It may be that a handful of visits / business cards / calls / faxes is all it takes but whether it's marketing or advertising isn't so relevant.

At this stage you are building up awareness of the service itself and also you in particular

If you think about "what's in it for them" for the referring trades then that may help to accelerate things

I run a small plastering and plumbing business and would be happy to refer based on environmental factors if that helps to get another view :)

The other thing I think to understand is at what stage do people have a need to remove flooring from a commercial and domestic aspect so that you can introduce yourself and be thought about early enough in the process

Just like to introduce myself. I am the one running the carpet removal business in the northwest.

It depends on the qulity of the carpet we uplift tbh as every job i do is different. If you call your local council they should be able to advise on the best thing to do with old carpets in your area.

Sorry for the confusion as I was under the impression it was Chris who had started the carpet collection business and this thread on the forum.

Thanks for the info. but the council only appear interested in collecting them themselves so they can charge accordingly or you can take them to a waste recycling station and pay the appropriate trade waste rate.

I believe there are specific carpet recycling companies who actually recycle old carpets.

Yes chris started the thread but we are working together on a few projects/business ideas.

Concerning recycling carpets got carpetrecycling.com and pop them an email, explaining your business and they should point you in the rigtht direction (mention CarpetRemovals.com :) )

Is it nice and warm where you are as its freezing here? We lived in Tenerife for a several years and the weather was nearly always nice and warm.

I am just waiting for my new house clearance site to be finished, then hit it for 2013.

I am hoping to work with other 'carpet lifters' in all areas of the uk.

Thanks for the update. I have been considering this idea since this thread was started as I have an industrial unit and looking for ideas for income opportunities. Obviously travelling expenses are now a big problem for many businesses especially when working on small profit margins.

Yes I think there is work out there, there's a few other folk now on here doing the uplift, the best thing is you can not travel miles as there's not enough money in the removal to travel far.

Which areas could you cover easily? My aim is to cover chesterfield, Mansfield and Sheffield.

Unfortunately those areas are a little too far as Chesterfield and Mansfield are approx. seventy miles away from myself. I am situated near Stoke on Trent.
