Advertising is popular and effective. There are gazillions of types of adverts. Adwords, banners, Facebook ads, newspapers, local radio are just some of them.

Or you could use Google My Business to get on the local map listings.

Or get your site ranked for local removals.

You need to think a little differently because 'removals' isn't a niche as such.

First you need to figure out what your particular niche is, within the removals industry.

Once you know this it will be a lot easier to figure out how to 'market' youself to that niche.

Example niches could be:

Small flat removals as in maybe students or single occupiers. This may be a niche.

Cheap removals as in people who have little money to spare and don't have expensive furniture and a grand piano. This may be a niche.

Long distance removals of all types. This may be a niche.

Small distance moves. A niche?

Big house removals. Lots of nice furniture, grand piano, antiques and or other delicate items. Definitely a niche.

Large single items. A niche?

Removals at short notice. A niche.

Express removals. A niche?

So once you've figured out where you'd like to be niche wise, you can start to market to that niche.

I hope that helps.

Local is key.

People look for local movers. You might be moving to the other end of the country but every one starts locally. Once you have found your niche put most of your marketing effort into attracting customers from the local area. Don't try to compete with the nationals.

I would start off aiming to be the best “man with a van” that you can be. Decide what you need to earn per hour, don’t be the most expensive, nor the cheapest. Facebook and local estate agents and letting agents can be good sources of business, and if you are good, you might become the business that local people recommend in social media.

If you reach the point where you only need to do full house removals, you can stop being the man with a van, and become the local removal firm.

A good place to start would be to just buy leads of people looking for removals to see if lead generation is a viable strategy and you have the right sales persona to close deals. After that set up your own lead gen campaign, using Google ads and a optimized website.

compare my move an example of a site you can buy leads from.

Also gumtree is a good place to post free ads.

Get listed on google and do your best to advertise locally and when you do get business don't be afraid to encourage people to mention you to others. Also encourage people to review you online too, social proof is huge in your line of work.

The amount of work I've seen people get from being referred by a friend or colleague demonstrates how valuable it is, long term that's the goal so that you're well known in your geographic location.

First, you need to identify the type of your audience: who’s most likely to enjoy what you create?
Start to promote your business through social media platforms and find your audience. You can also take help from Blogs, Paid Media and influencers.

For that type of business, personally I would hit it with the Facebook adverts both free and paid, I did removals years ago and that did fetch in the majority.

Also work on SEO on your website and chase long tail keywords like removal company areaname etc.

I agree with those who advise you to determine your audience first. I know from experience that as you have a literal profile of your potential client, it will be much easier to address him/her. And with this profile in mind, you can determine their needs and devise a more comprehensive marketing campaign that will effectively reach them.

Well I did the same for a decade, I actually did quiet well. In that time I never paid for an advert apart from using eBay, just use the hundreds of free listings available, plus most importantly get clients to recommend you on various forums.

One recommendation led to over twenty other jobs, but as above you are best to targets small niche and do it well. I specialised in small moves anywhere in the UK.

Definitely agree with all the advice to have a think about which clients you’ll be targeting before you go ahead with paid advertising. Although Facebook ads targeting a specific location will raise awareness about your company...I would think that this is something that people will be googling as soon as they know they need this service and looking locally (as opposed to coming across on Facebook and then thinking they might need to contact someone). Although I have seen people ask for suggestions in local FB groups so do join some of those.

And as a lot of your customers to begin with will be local I would definitely focus on: getting your Google My Business set up, get as many reviews from customers on there & put up pictures etc., register with local and other business directories (Yelp etc.), and focus on Local Business SEO for your site. Good luck!

You may not need to do any paid advertising.

Make sure you are on Google My Business and have filled out everything that's possible to fill in on there. Also add as many photos as you can and as regularly as you can.

Also, set yourself up on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - you can post on all 3 at the same time, via Instagram or a 3rd party, like Hootsuite (up to 3 platforms on their free version).

Join as many local Facebook groups as you can - I'm a member of various local FB groups with over 390,000 members. Most of these groups will have rules about promoting your business, i.e only once a month or only on Mondays.

Set up a spreadsheet with the groups, number of members and rules. With your spreadsheet, record when you are promoting your business to these groups, making sure you are covering them all regularly.

Also, monitor these groups for people asking for recommendations for removal companies. (You can actually monitor all your groups with just 3 clicks, rather than having to search each group).

Social Media promotion & advertising is easily reach your business to your potential customers. Then do some research where your costumers exist and then create ad campaigns such as PPC, Banner ads, Email Marketing, SMS marketing etc. When you do your removal work, take some videos and upload your social media sites. This is good strategies to reach your business.

...i am starting a business in the removals niche, so i wanted to know how to grow my audience and clients with time.

Removals is not a niche, of course, so one thing to embrace completely is to be specific about what you are doing and who you are doing it for. Few markets are niche, and a regular reason for new business failure is business people are not specific enough about their target market.

There are a load of tactics that can help businesses grow, in my opinion, the most important thing to plan out is your strategy.

One of the best strategies that I have come across that has worked across so many different businesses is the Customer Value Journey, it's all about taking people from being total strangers through to shouting from the rooftops about your business.

DigitalMarketerare a massive advocate of this and have a great overview that you can read here :)

Always happy to have any questions if you have any :)

    Thanks,
    Jamie

I agree with everyone who has said local, but I also think you could use Instagram Advertising as a way to target people in your local area.

I've seen ads for local services (with images to add credibility) and I've actually noticed them because they've stood out against the random/irrelevant online products that are usually advertised to me.

If I was moving I would simply google..

    man van *city*

you need to learn how to use Adwords. There are many tutorials available. It's quite simple to use.

Also I assume you have a van... so think of other ways you can make it pay off.

    Understand your tax obligations.

I suggest you focus on online marketing. There are several ways to promote your business with marketing and promotion at low costs. These are ways for the business and they work well. Some popular channels I can list for you that include:

    Google Adwords (PPC)
    Social Media Marketing (SMM)
    Email Marketing
    Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
