i did find that when expaining how he made his money in the nursing homes it mad no sense how he got the money to buy the home

he sold the ice cream van business then had debts to pay so the bank turned him down for a loan then his business was worth 600k

Strange he got 28k for the ice cream business ,needed 350k for the OPH,?

where did that come from.?

And where did he get the thousands of old people to fill up his homes.

They couldn't all be friends of his mum.?

Unless he had a friend on the council.

Read the book guys!!

His venture reminded me of that western where gradually they demolish the train to get wood to feed the boiler!!!

Most people would not dare do what he did...
To fund his care home..

He owned some bedsits and sold them ...

He sold is car to make a payment

He sold his house to make another payment
(imagine getting that one past the wife!!)

He then sold his ice cream round

Finally when he had nothing left to sell, he asked the builder to
bail him out, who did at 10% per month....

He managed to get 20 old people because he was the ONLY home that was offering single rooms
(his first home only had 30)...he coulldnt afford to build for 40

And to fill it out to show the bank, he got his mum and her friends!!

And by the skin of his teeth he survived

How much did he pay his care workers or is that not in the book.?:|

I thought he was an ok guy, direct and to the point.
Going from zero to where he is now is some achivement.
His house in France was beautiful....

I thought his profile was the best of all 5 dragons. In fact it showed them all as decent people rather than their larger than life persona's on DD.

But Duncans profile seemed to go into more depth about his upbringing, his businesses and just seemed alot more frank than the others. Ive read his book anyway so it kinda followed that but it was very entertaining.

I forget the answer, but yes it was.

He also talks about the LEECHES and SPONGERS ...
Sorry I mean "recruitment consultants"... wrecked his industry too, by screwing him and the NHS and pushing up rates into the sky....

Boy I hate them with a passion, so "James Caan?" you are OUT - I rate his entrepreneurial "achievement" as worthless...

I can't understand these millionaires when they say they will donate all their money to charity, when they die, why not do it now? Do they want to buy their way into heaven?

...and leave all his family with nothing, and force them go through what he went.

I only watched the Theo Paphitis one and I thought he came across little dull as well. Kind of just a "hey look how rich I am" ego trip really. You get the impression they were picked on at school and are loving the chance to show the world how much they don't care anymore (but really do!).

I enjoyed the program on Duncan. I have read his book too which goes in to a lot more detail.

I thought the Peter Jones one was quite strange when he went to see his parents. Looked like he hadn't seen them for years and didn't really get on with them.

Excellent points what better way to spend your later years than going around giving and seeing the results.

I had a very tough time economically during my childhood.

Do I envy my childrens easy life,of course I do.:)

Would I want them to go through what I did ,NO WAY.

However brilliant and successful they may be, it is almost impossible to rise to the top without upsetting/putting out of business someone along the way, this will inevitably catch up in their conscience and reflections despite society excusing them. But hey, it is a jungle out there.

You are right. I would probably reflect on that theory whilst smoking a £50 quid note and laughing at my ex main competitor who, after buying him/her out, I then employed as a court jester for my own personal amusement

Ethics, who needs 'em!

Most of them still do give a lot of money to charity whilst they are alive. But they need the money to keep their business growing. If he gave away say £600m today then he'd have no money to turn that in to £1.2bn for example.

Duncan (and others) are not going to leave their family with nothing. They leave them enough to be comfortable but they do not need £1.2bn or whatever.

I like Peter Jones' idea for his kids. He says that it's all going into a fund, and will be paid out at different rates depending on what his kids do.

For example, If his kids get well paid jobs, the fund will match their salary every year. If his kids chose to go into respectable but underpaid jobs (Nursing/Teaching/etc) then that rate goes up to three/four times their salary.

I think it's a genius way to leave your kids with a comfortable life, but not to just throw all your money at them and hope they stay well grounded people (Which isobviously nigh on impossible in that situation..)

Not a very nice thing to do.

One of my grandchildren has Aspergers syndrome,so under pete's system he would be severly penalised as a result of an accident at birth.

Why do these stupid people think that we are all born equal and posses the same qualities that made them successfull.

Ignorance and narcissism in its highest form .

For once you are right, Earl, there's no room in Pete's system to adjust it at all!!! I expect all his decendants who can't work through no fault of their own will be left out in the cold. What a total barsteward.

while smoking a £50 note, why not reflect on the people that are almost as good as you or even perhaps better, but were never given a chance to make it. every second 1 person dies of starvation etc.

You want to get out more.

Is that it just more snide.?

Well I supose as a purveyor of practical Jokes one could not expect something more eloquent .

As the whole basis of that trade is taking the micky out of other people ,a la Ross ,Brand and Barrymore.

As you know I don't normally bother to reply to your posts and I don't know why I did this time, for some reason I couldn't let one more bit of guff float by without picking up on it.

Your reply above, comparing the sale of simple practical jokes with notoriously badly behaved people, compounds my initial reasons for not responding to your posts. You just have to have the last word and be nasty with it.

...it does put things into perspective.

You are right I will start on twenties and donate the difference to charity ;)

If he wants to donate to charity when he dies then thats up to him. Either way he will probably contribute more than you, me or anyone on UKBF could ever wish to give (in life or after), so even if it is for vanity reasons, he should be applauded.

Charity, does not mean throw money at it. One small kind gesture a day....
