So im not a genius on the internet but was wondering what happens if i bought a domain name that somebody in the future really wanted such as a famous person etc,
Can I sell it to them?Would there company/agent get in contact to buy it off me ?

You could do a couple of things,

put it on an auction site,

or

just put your contact details on there and wait it out.

To be honest, my experience is that unless you completely wipeout the variations, PR companys and agents will generally take off the shelf domains. But - I know that product name domains have been sold for high prices.

I think that's called cyber squatting and is generally frowned upon!

Unless you are lucky and you have a name that you buy by coincidence most people will look for alternatives these days rather than being held to ransom!

Take the guy that owns Twitter.co.uk as an example. There are lots of overseas people that buy domains for all phrases they can think of in the hope that someone will come along to buy.

If you must do that then domain parking is your best bet and auction it on somewhere like Sedo.

At the same time I know people that are sitting on a generic domain that *would* be good for us, but they're asking waaay too much.

Certainly agree with that. It just depends on how important it is to a company / individual. It's obviously big business or people wouldn't sell. But you can still make decent amounts of money for a good domain by parking it and getting revenue when people click on your links on the parked page.

I have a few domains myself that I had myself that I was going to use but never got around to it so decided to park them and pretty much pays for the renewal etc. Remember once you have a domain that people have once expressed an interest in they will wait until it expires and snap it up on the cheap. So remember to renew if you are going to squat! (I've done that before, saved £2000 and got the domain for £3 in the end!)

domains do sell well, but they need to be very valuable names to someone, a domain is only worth what someone will pay.

Toys.com was sold to toysrus for $5.1 million
Slots.com was sold for $5.5 million
photo.com was sold for $1.75 million
Sex.com - $14 million
business.com - $7.5 million
beer.com - $7 million
casino.com - $ 5.5 million

You need to get the right name (most will be gone now) and then find the right buyers.
