Xero wants to find out what makes small businesses happy as part of the Business of happiness campaign.

As such, we're asking this week, does your business make you happy?

And if not, at what point do you think you will ever be 'happy' with the stage their business is at?

Let us know, for a chance to feature in a later article on our sister site BusinessZone.

Yes, very. Because it means I don't have to work 9-5 for someone else. My business means I can work from home and share my time between everything else including growing a forest garden.

The money enables me to buy the things I want and lead the lifestyle I choose.

If I didn't make money from it, I certainly wouldn't do it for the love!

@fisicx Hello! Thanks for the comment. These threads are part of a campaign Xero is running on BusinessZone to find out what makes businesses happy. I'm an editor on the site and post quite frequently on UKBF on a range of different topics (You may not be familiar with me as I've only been in the role 5 weeks so far...). Let me know if you have any questions, I'm always happy to chat!

Thanks all for your comments so far!

Much the same reason why being my own boss makes me happy.

Yes, I like to receive the rewards of success, made possible through lots of hard work and dedication, knowing that nobody else could claim credit and steal the thunder.

It may seem selfish but I feel more motivated working for myself as it is an excuse to not slack.

My business makes my wife happy ...to me, it's just another job. Not having to work at all would make me happy, but then Xero would have nothing to sell me...which would make them unhappy. Happiness is often a zero sum game.

Its funny as being ex forces I loved being almost institutionalised and then working for other people and then my family business ( electrical )
However after starting my own business from a long history of part time pest control I have to say its the happiest ive been all be it with less income as ive only just gone full time.
It will be interesting to see after heavy investment in a website and training just how quickly new business comes in. Its a competitive sector with a lot of part time hobbyists providing services.
Im hoping spending some time on this forum will be beneficial and in answer to your question, I am loving what I do and as long as the kids and mortgage are good I will remain happy at all stages of my business progression.

Really lovely to get an insight into your businesses and how happy they make you! Such a great story Terry, I'd be really interested in keeping up to date with how your venture goes after the website launch. Hope you find the forums useful!

The people in my business make me happy. For me that is and has always been the most important. I treat work life (in some ways) the same as home life - I keep people around me that I want to be around me.

No it doesn't, it gives me the right hump, there are a million things I would rather be doing, like sticking cocktail sticks in my eyes!!!

Daft question really, ask here and you'll obviously get a positive response, no one starts a business doing something they don't enjoy. Now pop over to the insolvency forum and ask the same question. I'll wager anything you like the response will be opposite!!!
