MASSEY

I had a wicked deal off a newspaper in birmingham westmidlands,

They offered me 8 weeks of advertising half a page for four weeks and smaller for 4 weeks after,

But included also was 10,000 leaflets designed and printed,

And delivered to postcodes of our choice,

What a deal!!! for £520 quid double sided leaflets might i add.

The paper advertising got us a call for 15,000k job on the first day so immediately were in profit,

But i just want opinions on the leaflet should i drasticly change it for the next campaign, they have not been delivered yet but i just want to know peoples opinions

http://www.flickr.com/photos/48970960@N05/4490696874/

If your in the west midlands and would like info on who they are pm me,

What do you think :)

Pretty poor, IMO.

The headline is the name of your business. It hsould be something that's interesting to your prospects.

The copy is really just a list of things you do without any real reason why people should get any of these things from you.

Yes i thought that myself, the printers were pushing us to get it sorted
Im leaning towards a drastic change for the next lot, but you never know there might be a response from these ones :)

There was nothing that "grabbed" me, made me want to read on, look at more......sorry - boring springs to mind!
Could you consider doing a special offer.....specifically for this campaign? Money off, free kitchen cupboard handles, free gas safety check or something along those lines?

I appreciate these flyers can sometimes look a bit cheesy but at the end of the day you need me to keep yours and stick it on my fridge rather than bin it with the rest of the junk.

Good Luck!

- No headline

- No benefits

There's no point going any further because if you don't have those then it's not going to do anywhere near as well as it could.

Yeah im a bit bugged i had to rush this because someone else was sortin it and i had no time, but the advertising alone was worth a bomb they pretty much bought us,

the next leaflett drop im gonna put more thought in to it,

And as for the spelling mistake, they wanna hope they realised that or they will be printing them again :)

Rule 1: Capture people's attention

Unfortunately your flyer is quite bland and not very attractive. I can see what your going for in that clean cut professional look. But it lacks the wow factor and small design errors compromises your professionalism.

Rule 2: Make it relevant to your customers and sell your product/services

Just with one look it should be obvious what your advertising. You need a title that is relevant to your customers. C&N Property solutions won't mean much to new customers. One or two big images are better than lots of little one's. You could also incorporate some of what you've put at the bottom to sell your services better e.g. instead of "Kitchens supplied and fitted"..."Quality kitchens supplied and fitted!" etc.

Rule 3: Give people a reason to keep it!

What do people do with flyers? Throw them on the floor if they're out, throw them in the bin if they're at home. So give people a reason to keep it. Special promotions e.g. discount codes mean people have to keep the flyer to get their discount.

Apart from that I think the layout of the design isn't too bad. Red probably isn't a great colour as its associated with things like stop and danger which isn't great if you do gas and electrics.

Finally i'd say it's best you hire a professional to design your flyer. If your getting 15k jobs then spending £50-100 on a flyer design wouldn't be a bad idea.

Dont know if any help to anyone with future copy writing, but the general rule of thumb is

AIDCA
Attention
Interest
Desire
Conviction
Actionline.

Might help someone in the future.

Thankyou for sharing :)

Hey dude

The flyer is OK, as it in looks nice but there are a few classic mistakes. Fistly your name as the headline, no one cares about you or your company. You need to make it an interesting headline to grab people's attention "Does your house need revovation work?" is still rubbish, but still gets people attention better.

I would also make things more specific, for example target one particular service. Like if people has just bought a house, selling a house or looking for a new bathroom etc.

You also need to give people a call to action, not just your number. If you offer something like "Thinking of selling your house? Learn the 5 most costly mistakes people make when selling, that you should know. Learn the 5 secrets for increasing your home's value for minimal cost. Get the most for your house b getting our free report by simply calling xxx"

This way people will contact you and you then have them on your database. You then establish relationship marketing and contact them regularly with information and sales offers.

Also I suggest making the flyer look more like news rather than just a flyer. Many people throw things away if they think they are adverts, however when you offer information then people won't be so quick to dismiss it.

Hope this helps.

Matt

IMO - It is very clear and easy to digest, no gimics, no frills, just good plain english that does exactly what it says in the tin...

* You do not always need a slogan as your headline, somethimes your business name works fine if it is branded correctly and shows that you are professional...

Thats what I thought as well! I'm tired off nonsence adds- just go straight to the point! Your leaflet does the job! Marketeers are going too far lately... All these cheeky stupid adds.... You would better ask opinion of people who would use the service- is the message well received?

also sell the benefits before the features - what will people GET OUT of your service - how will it make them feel? just a thought - think it might be too late if you have printed, but next time! Good luck with the deal though!

Your business name will NEVER work fine as a headline. You'll lose a large chunk of sales out of the campaign if you use your business name instead of a good attention-grabbing headline which is relevant to your target audience. Simple as that.

A headline isn't supposed to tell someone what you do. It's supposed to grab the attention of the relevant visitors and give them the curiosity/interest to continue reading the leaflet. If you don't use the headline in that manner, then it's a complete waste of one of the most valuable parts of the leaflet.

Unfortunately though it's quite common to find leaflets which just state the following:

'I&M Plumbers

  • Taps
  • Heating
  • Radiators

Call xxxxxxxxxxx'

With no incentive to use the business, no incentive to even take any notice of it and as a result, zero sales response.

I'm trying desperately to disagree with Scott but can't:) would he lose orders with the original leaflet? I bet not many as if someone needs some work done they need some work done and if the leaflet looks professional and has the relevant info on it then thats whats needed to make the homeowner pick up the phone. However, one way of advertising I've used to good effect in the past is to choose an aspect of my trade thats either the most profitable or is the most impressive in terms of people saying "oh look wow, he can do this" then headline the ad with that - so in OP case he would perhaps headline fusebox changes from £99.00 or somehting like that. It focuses the mind and makes people think of getting a box changed even though they may not have had it in the front of their mind. Underneath that headline you can then put "we also do bla bla bla" If the headline depicts something really skilled, then people might think "well, if he can do that, he must be able to help with my xyz" So, yes a headline that shouts the company name is wasted....

Sorry to be another negative but I just found it rather boring! Get your GasSafe and NICEIC logos on! They will stand out better than the writing.
Also the only things that stand out are the pictures. You need to make the initial glance from someone more informative so if i just see it out of the corner of my eye I know what you do, at the moment you don't know this until you read through.

I've not read all the responses here, but I think your first problem is that you let printers design it.

It's not grabbing me, try and look at it with the point of view of a reader in mind (tricky I know).

Why should I bother reading it?
What's in it for me?
What's to attract me.
Whats going to make me care enough to read it?

Massey - I am going to get slated here, but its perfect for what your advertsing, i have been studying the "people looking for trades" market solid for 2 years now, every single customer i ask what they thought of teh advertsing, the website, the engineer, the way i done my quote etc etc.

And all this marketing spiel is great if your advertising yourself as a life coach or you want to buy gold off people.

But for trades its not the way to go about things.

i have learnt the hard way, i put an advert in my local paper that was designed by a doctor of marketing, loads of call to actions, talked about what i can do for them, used all teh buzz words, expert, premium, call now and all that bxllocks and the result was very few calls, the ad i put in which was just like yours did much better.

My website feedback and stats are teh same people dont like fancy, flash ads and websites, they arent fooled by marketing ploys to get them to call.

I used to cringe at ads that had things like 25 years experience, all aspects of heating carried out etc etc but thats what works, why you ask?

Well because people looking for trades, want local, friendly and reliable, they want that tradesman to turn up do a good job and not charge a fortune, a clean looking ad with a large gas safe/sparky badge(because thats what people look for) is what does best, your ad is absoloutely perfect, also no matter what peopleon this forum say, its not obvious to everyone what services a sparky covers, how many times have you been asked, "do you do this?, do you do that?" are you NICEIC registered etc etc? and youv'e thought to youreself, well of course i am.

thats what your ad needs to contain, your experience, what services you do, your badges, and a special offer if you have one, basically anything that makes you look trustworthy and inexpensive will do the trick.

im not pretending to be a marketing legend but what i am is a tradesman who has spent 10k plus on offline adverts, so i know what works and what dosent, these marketing guys (no offence) are following a guide i.e they have been taught/learnt what sells but in our case talking to mrs smith and asking what she liked about the advert wis far better than any book.

Ok let it rip, marketing dudes, im ready for you:)

Another point is that when people see an ad thats too out the norm, i.e super salesy they dont think oooh this company must be the best? they think, "whos this charalatan?", people go looking in the paper expecting to see a certain type of ad, and they look for certain things, and if your ad dosent have those things then you fail.
im not saying have an ad that looks the same, but make it have simalair text, you can use images and colours to make it stand out, and if your advertsing a price cheaper than the ad next to you, then bonus:)

Just looked at the ad, you dont have any of the badges that people look for, gas safe, sparky badge and anything else you have fill that red space with them, also a coupel of banners with special offers would be good, you have loads of space not being used, also possible make the text bigger, and list the services in order of importance TO YOU, i.e the ones you most want people to ring about.

You have a similar attitude to me on it, where you explained the criteria to be for life coaches etc I was thinking along them lines, one thing I did mess up was not having prominent nic / gas safe logo's and possibly a reason for them to retain it with an offer,

I will be interested to see the quality of the response from it, maybe on the next run have one properly designed and measure them against each other,

I'm sure plenty will disagree with you ;-)

Problem with completely changing the ad is that when the same ad is seen months on end, it builds up more trust with the reader, so when somebody does need a sparky and looks in teh paper, they will look at your ad and trust you because they have noticed it week after week, soi think teh best course of action is to make only slight changes (like the badges), thats teh mistake i made, i completely redesigned it 4 or 5 times so it lost the trust factor, if you get what i mean.

Dont listen to these marketing wannabes, listen to your uncle lasagne, he is by far the most knowledgeable member on all topics, and as Tej knows im smarter than your average plumber, except when it comes to spelling and grammar;)

Yes I get what you mean about the trust factor, I'm skepticle of marketers anyway but will take on board your posts as you do know your stuff.
