Great discussion, having read all of the posts I started to build an understand of what should be done etc.. And then G Lasagne went and put a spanner in the works with his opinion - which I have to agree with.

There are many rules that need to be followed, many of which are straight out of a book or one persons view.

At the end of the day, different things work for different types of businesses or services.

If you know your business then YOU know what your customers like or want. Just make sure it is covered on the flyer.

The only thing I would say is that you should be happy that the flyer is a reflection of you as a business - get the brand right.
The certification logo's will create trust and make sure the spelling is checked...

All the best

Ben

thread has taken an interesting turn:) Interestingly, I have yet to see ever on UKBF in 4 years of membership an actual example of a trade leaflet etc that wasnt working being converted to one by a marketeer which did work complete with all before and after stats so as to prove the argument beyond doubt.;)

Looks like no one is rising to your bait lasagne:rolleyes:

Seriously, I do agree with much that you say and I think trades people need to have a mind of their own when it comes to marketing their services and not take things said by some marketing people as gospel.

If I took alot of advice that came my way on here regarding marketing my business, my business image would end up a total embarrasment. A prime example is after me mentioning my website wasnt getting many calls, the unambiguous advice from someone was that there was "no call to action" on the front page and thats why people were not calling which is absoloute ******** as right there on the front page is precise instructions of how to obtain a quote and where to ring:rolleyes:

The one area where I'd disagree with Dave is using name of firm as a heading - its a total waste of space....

I never said use the name of your company as a title, although i do think you should have it prominent.

trades is all about reputaion, not how cheap you are or anything else.
So if mrs smith flicks through her local paper every week and sees an ad from billys plumbing week after week, she will trust that company as shes familiar with it "must be a good company if there in week after week" a lot of people do think like that.
so if mrs smith cold water pipe bursts she will remember billys plumbing and flick straight to the page that hes always on week after week, which is great, but if she cant find the paper and has to use google or yellow pages, how is she going to find him if she dosent know the name?

my analytics say that my company name massively out performs any other keyword, so your vans, website, uniform, ads etc etc must display your name prominently when your a tradesman, so that you can be found by whatever means, thats my opinion anyway:)

personally I'd offer a call to action, telling them to go to your site to get something of value like '10 Tips on How to' or 'Secret Tricks on'.

This way you'll stand out from your competitors.

I agree with the other comments, but at the same time the design isn't all that bad. Its just what you do with it.

Regards

Simon

"I had a wicked deal off a newspaper in birmingham westmidlands,

They offered me 8 weeks of advertising half a page for four weeks and smaller for 4 weeks after, but included also was 10,000 leaflets designed and printed,

And delivered to postcodes of our choice,

What a deal!!! for £520 quid double sided leaflets might i add.

The paper advertising got us a call for 15,000k job on the first day so immediately were in profit,"

Fun thread... loads to say but one thing stands out far and above anything else...

You got what for how much?

A local newspaper or a local free through the door "business directory"? If thats a local newspaper 10k is quite a short run. If it is a local newspaper, especially one people buy, well then you got a bargain. 10k flyers printed and distributed, I'd normally expect that to cost between 300 and 450 quid depending on who/where/when and how. Adverts like you described in a genuine local newspaper, I'd expect to be pretty heavy on the pocket.

I get the feeling though that you are selling/helping promote a local business directory type thing? If so, props for gettign so many peoples attention and fooling them :)

Its a paper they have about 60 different versions some free some paid for, they go every where there obviously is a demand for them, for 10k double sided leaflets alone and delivered to buy anywhere else it would be £500 alone easy, and pretty much the first day the papers were out we got a call for a good job, its a good packge deal they basically undercut everybody

Well let me know who they are and I might sling some work their way, if they look legit enough.

As for costing on 10k printed and distributed: you can do this as low as 300 though with better service etc, more likely closer to 400, but your being raped if your paying 500+ for that service :0)

I'm own a couple of printing businesses and have somewhat of an idea on pricing for these things ;)

Why are you commenting on the price of deleivering leaflets, the op stated that it was £520 for 10,000 leaflets AND 8 weeks in the paper, so if your saying its £400 for the leaflets, then the question is surely if £120 for the newspaper ads is a good deal, is it not?

Cause I said it's bargainous if he is getting the 10k leaflets printed and distributed for that price + the advertising if it is indeed a genuine paper and not one of those local directory/rags that get spammed through your door (his unwillingness to share the papers name on the thread does lead me to wonder).

As for me specifying the price range from 300 to 400 for the leaflets printing and distribution, originally it was demonstrating how good a value deal he may have got, and then later it was correcting his figures on the cost of this service: "500 minimum".

Don't get me wrong, I am interested in deals like this for my businesses, and would potentially be only to happy to splash that cash, but I wont do it if it is just some crappy business directory/spam rag that gets dropped through peoples doors straight into their bins, and the flyers end up in the canal. I don't mind spending money, but I do mind wasting it.

Actually I would definitely call you up if I was in the Birmingham area. I do like it - it delivers the message to me anyway.

Don't get too creative with these sorts of flyers as you may end up looking like a cowboy and it doesn't look like that at all - just clean and simple good old fashioned property renovations etc.

From what i gather its a mixture of paid for and free, your right in saying if its £520 for leaflets but the advertising is poor then it is expensive,

But we had a call pretty much in the first week from it, im going to record all the business that comes from it and post it on the forum,

It might be the type of advertising that fits a certain business criteria, eg if people phone us for a house rewire and lets say its £2500 that puts me in a profit from the leaflets and ads straight away,

For smaller companies either selling products or offering lower value services they will need more of a response form it to make a profit,

That make sense hopefully :)

Yep, and it clearly was worth the investment for you, I mean I'd have to be even more special than I am to not see that if you got a job worth 15k was it? from an investment of 520 that you were onto a winner. Anyway, so who are these guys? Whats their company/newspapers called? I am serious when I say that for a deal like what you appear to have got, that I'd be very interested. In particular I am looking to start promoting www.hippoprint.co.uk in the five biggest citys in the UK and as such your supplier sounds worth a look.

Cheers :)

Its fine for what you do and the pictures are the attention grabber.

Sometimes to much waffle is counter productive ,in your trades I would say thats true as any benefits are self evident.

people just want a good competent craftsman for houshold stuff.

great getting the 15k order,be interested to hear how it all goes.:)

Another point is that when people see an ad thats too out the norm, i.e super salesy they dont think oooh this company must be the best? they think, "whos this charalatan?", people go looking in the paper expecting to see a certain type of ad, and they look for certain things, and if your ad dosent have those things then you fail.
im not saying have an ad that looks the same, but make it have simalair text, you can use images and colours to make it stand out, and if your advertsing a price cheaper than the ad next to you, then bonus:)

You are right - there are people who want the bollicks and there are people who don't. If I was looking for a tradesman in the local paper or from a leaflet I'd be looking for George Smith, Plumber and not a kid who's done a marketing degree.

Well its average .Needs a great headlne and you should list all the benefits as bullet points .invest a few hundred pounds in a good copy writer .
its a specialist skill.
lastly you should have website and put the url on your flyer. One of the most important pages on your website is your testimonial page.Get as many real testimonials from past customers and post them on the website.
