Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up an ecommerce site 'eGrooming Ltd'

The company will be an etailer of high end male grooming products, shaving, skincare etc.

The name has been rejected by companies house as it may cause offence.

Should I scrap the name of my business eGrooming and the domain egrooming.co.uk?

Cheers

I'd be worried about the type of customer that might find your site!

The name itself is innocent, anybody that does get offended is clearly taking the name in the wrong way. It's an innocent name as your site is about grooming.

I don't thing anybody would have any cause to complain.

I am not sure how you will get on with SEO in google, although you are ranking for the term egrooming now, so it shouldn't be a problem.

No it doesnt offend me either but I can see companies house point e meaning online so they have the mindset of online grooming..dodgey ground.

Noticed your site is live (nice too) but if you need to go ltd why not set up malegrooming ltd and have egrooming under the ltd companies umbrella..then if you want to try a different domain name you can also put that under the umbrella too
just make sure you declare in your footer something along the lines of

egrooming.co.uk is a product of Male grooming ltd No12345678

Well... word meanings change over time, like "gay" for example...

Most words in the dictionary has many meanings... its the top one which is used more.

I don't think this is a problem with your business name... although you cannot use grooming products online or electronically (you could on webcam but not the same thing). It is sick to attempt to form a company with such name... as it has a more sinister meaning.

Just consider yourself lucky you didn't get a four letter abbreviation sprayed on the front of your house!

As above, it doesn't offend me personally and I instinctivly just thought of 'grooming' as in products etc as it is meant to be.

If company house has rejected it however you may be better coming up with an alternative so you can register it properly, unless you go down the route of an umbrella company as someone mentioned.

Did just type grooming.com into google however, and all of the top search are dog grooming/ male grooming etc, so maybe have a look at those and see how you can maybe slightly tweak your name?

Doesn't offend me in the slightest. The first thing that popped into my head was grooming products, not anything more sinister. The people who are offended by it probably won't be your target audience anyway, so I say stick with it. If you do happen to get any negative press along the way, it may actually help you, any press is good press, so they say.

Have you ever considered what it be like for this branding ("eGrooming") on .. (?):-
* franking stamp and envelope/parcel/package labelling
* invoices
* as the domain name in browser history
* bank statements
etc

It coincidently incriminates the OP's potential customers... after all customers wont be imprisoned as they done nothing wrong but it wont stop bad hurtful rumours, having your telephone bugged, getting weird looks, getting alienated by friends and family etc.

For yourself OP, accountants, suppliers, couriers, royal mail etc. may either refuse to deal with you or develop an awkward professional relationship.

If you want to keep eGrooming for the novelty word-of-mouth promotion it will occasionally bring... you will develop a brand... but no one will risk buying from you.

The test... would I alienate someone and report them if I happen to see a big eGrooming franking stamp across an envelope? YES... Would I deal with a company with such name as a business? NO.

I think given the feedback from Companies House and also above I'd seriously consider renaming.

Starting a business is hard enough without having to fight against peoples preconceptions as well.

The name does stand out. Register it as a domain, I guess you have already done so. At Companies House register another name such as XYX LIMITED, but with your bank register with them as XYZ Limited trading as e-GROOMING. COM.

Companies House will accept a name like > / alter this suggestion as you see fit / Phillips Hairspray & Toiletries t/as e.GROOMING.COM Limited. If it was presented this way the application would have gone through, speak to them, email them, or put a note in with the application, you want the Sensitive Words Dept, and explain the e-GROOMING stands for e=commerce. PS: Bear in mind supermarkets may not stock e.grooming products for the same reasons Company House give. You could have e-storegrooming. I-STOREGROOMING, do try and keep away from FU-grooming.

I wouldn't worry about offending people (I literally never worry about that :))

But clearly it's going to raise a few eyebrows and be the butt of a few jokes. One huge problem is that 'eGrooming' could one day very well become a popular phrase for the type of 'Grooming' you're concerned about being associated with.

Occasionally that sort of double meaning makes a brand memorable of course... But mostly it's more negative than positive so I see no reason to want to risk it. Name change at this stage is easier than at any time in the future, so may as well re-think this one.

I agree with most of the comments posted already.

You may be causing future problems for yourself and your business.

Find another name and save yourself any grief.

good luck

It doesn't offend me, however I would look into another name. I wouldn't take the risk of being stuck with the name if it causes some problems.

Hi, whilst not offended by the name, I can see the genuine business model, I don't think it's a good idea. Business at the moment is tough enough and you don't want to risk offending what might be valuable customers. That said, as Irn Bru have proved, an ad that does cause offence can often bring in MORE. As one post said I would be concerned about the TYPE of person that finds you online !!!!!

Well... (me again) I really don't understand the OP. Its not the case he has gone ahead with a company name and found out 2 years down the road whether to rebrand or not... but is aware the likely confusion between his business and some of the most vile criminals on the planet... and even conscious of this fact he appears to consider it
