You didn't keep the house?
All the technology, computers etc - is toolmaking now a more efficient job? Can a toolmaker now produce the same work as you used to, faster and safer?
The end of society, per May's predecessor Thatcher.
I remember those times fondly as the two most important words in the British worker's vocabulary were parity and differential and an important segment of British society was always on strike for either parity or differential culminating in the winter of discontent.
Anyone too young to remember those wonderful days under the last Trade Union Government should just Google "Winter of Discontent" to see what we had to put up with.
Thatcher changed the way the country was run so that it was run by the elected Government and not by the Trade Unions and she had a huge mandate from the people to do it.
She was a true hero of the people

SO WAS HITLER.
Well their choices are usually rent or buy. If you know of other choices they have then by all means lets see them.
Perhaps when house prices drop the renters who are waiting will think about buying.
When rents are higher than mortgage then usually a good idea to think about mortgage. Some probably still are.
Others may be waiting. The trend for house prices is up, it does not go up every year.
Oh and those speculators buying property - if they rent them out they are providing a place for those who rent....
Not everyone wants to buy, not everyone can buy.
Amazing how self interest distorts reality.![]()
The alternative for a lot of people is to remain living at their parents.
For a single person with an average salary, even renting is unaffordable for a lot of people.
Even a couple living together with average salaries will struggle to pay rent and save for a mortgage.
I sold it a few years ago to live somewhere nicer.
The jobs not important most of my neighbours where brick layers and other craftsmen .Tell me how many could afford 1.6 million for a house now?
I suspect the right to buy was a big part of the race to the bottom.
I suppose that there was a certain amount of self interest involved as I disliked sitting in the dark as the power workers were on strike or not being able to get to work as either one or other of the rail unions were on strike or being unable to heat my home as the coal miners were on strike or being unable to bury my relatives etc etc etc
Greed and ignorance has the upper hand I am afraid!!!

Blimey good job you was born after the war.
Nothing throughout history has ever been gained for working people without fighting for it in one form or another.
Greed and ignorance has the upper hand I am afraid!!!
Then I'm at a loss as to why you continue to argue the case that people in poverty deserve their circumstances because they simply aren't trying hard enough.Cobby, some of us have intimate experience of the problems of poverty. And have since have years of experience working with projects to help others.
I am not generalising.
Poverty and near-poverty living can (and does) lead to health problems and dental problems. Pre-pay for a yearly card? Over £100? How many people in that situation do you think have that sort of money sitting around available to them? Come on.OK so rent and council tax covered. So not covering food, water, gas, lecky, insurance, phone, clothing etc - and still they survive. Dental? Its not necessarily much cost if anything on a yearly basis unless you have problems.
Prescription? If you have a lot you can pre pay for a card.
You do not seem to understand markets, or the broader point being put forward about home ownership. :/The buyers appears to disagree with you regarding affordable.
If the housing was unaffordable it would not sell.
In the 50s to the 70s the vast majority of industrial disputes were the fault of extremely bad management. I still haven't forgiven the Tories for the 3 day week.Incidentally I forgot to mention the motor industry and their weekly strikes.
I still haven't forgiven the Tories for the 3 day week.
I introduced a 4 day week for my staff years ago. Actually a day off each week. There is a big difference between planned flexi time and enforced down time. There are many studies which show that 4 day weeks increase productivity. My staff appreciated the chance to get all their household chores, dentist appointments etc. out of the way before the weekend. We'll have another one (well a four day week) if the Green Party have their way

Calling a referendum was done because of panic and calling a general election .was done because of panic. I actually do not think the result of the election will make any changes to how Brexit will proceed. It will affect what happens in the UK though.
What a complete mess
5 years of chaos will now ensue
Indeed.I'll be interested to see an analysis of the votes to see what effect the young first time voters and the over 65s had on the overall result
I can't see this government lasting for another year let alone 5 years.
Mrs May has made a right mess and instead of strengthening her hand in Brexit negotiations it has made it far far weaker.
I'm not even sure that she has a mandate to govern her own party let alone the country
But the numbers don't add up. Even with the SNP and LDs they are still short of a majority.but Labour would not support such a vote. They should simply say - if you can't govern, give us a chance, we can form a government.
Once she has lost a few important votes, she can't call another election without a 66% vote for it, but Labour would not support such a vote. They should simply say - if you can't govern, give us a chance, we can form a government.
On the figures it is going to be VERY tough. The DUP will lead her by the nose, but the DUP will never do anything that might allow Jeremy Corbyn into power. Austerity doesn't work, and today's result shows the people are not satisfied with the work the Conservatives have been doing, so we're headed towards your idea of 'worse' no matter whatOr worse - a government that wants to spend spend spend.
As Ian said earlier, Boris has Charisma, but he is a literal clown. Pretty much every other choice they could make varies from vacuous to "are you sure he's not a sex offender?"Now, who would be a good replacement for her? Several candidates - I'm hoping not Boris.
Gove would be interesting...
