Evening / Morning all,

I am wondering if i can find out if a company pay Google for advertising and if so how much the spend is?

Thanks in advance.

Easiest way would be to search the business or their main products on Google and look for sponsored search results relating to the business.

This will show you that they advertise with google (search results at least)

Then you could set-up an adsense campaign for the same product, keywords, your demographics. That will give you an idea on how much they are paying per click.

It is hard to properly gauge how much their total spend is, however this is what I have done in the past.

SpyFu from the above list looks like it promises what you want. Not sure how accurate it is though as it only had one of my first page keywords listed and some listed that are definitely not keywords.
One thing that did surprise me was that it appears that almost all of our major competitors appear to have stopped using google ads.

Is there anyone here who does do google adds able to confirm how close the actual spend cost is to the estimate they give?

They can only estimate based on the cost for the keywords, position and how long the ad is running for. I did some work for a PPC intelligence agency in London, its just a case of firing millions of queries and scraping results and storing them.

GA works for many businesses. That said, I've used Google Ads on and off for many years now. I avoid it when I can because AFAIAC, they are a bunch of crooks who charge me for bot clicks, refuse to give refunds even when fraud has been proven and offer an absolutely dismal level of customer service (on most occasions).

Their estimates are nowhere near accurate. I believe estimates are ntentionally skewed by Google.

There may be some Google fan-boys along soon to contest everything I've said and/or to say that I just didn't know how to play the Adwords game. Good luck to them, but I've been using Adwords since some of them were in primary school.

I would pretty much agree with you Clinton. I have often criticised the fact that adwords is *supposedly* an auction but why when I bid on a keyword that has zero competition is it saying I need to pay 15p-20p. Surely if there are no bidders I should be charged 1p, con!

SEMRush is another that gives you an idea about relative spend (compare to their reported results for one you know for sure and use that as a comparison) and even what adverts they're running against which keywords.

Oh, and if you're looking to get the best prices:
1 keyword per 1 landing page per 1 ad group per 1 advert

Tailor the content on the page to the keyword, including metas, first para, h1, etc, and you'll get the best price possible for your account history.

+1 for SEMRush. They have 10 of so searches for free.

Plug in the domain. Make sure its set to the U.K. and it will give you a fair bit of data including where they're advertising, how much those adverts cost per click and roughly how much they get searched.

In Addition to the free tools listed by Clinton, I also support Webgeek observations on SEMRUSH, which I found to be great with the Paid and Organic Results they find for you
