Sounds like they have probably gone into some freelancer website and hired someone in India to try and get them out of paying you
You can find plenty off cheap Indians offering legal services who will do exactly this, sending dodgy looking emails in broken English, and done even have a proper website.

I have received by a couple of these myself, in most cases I don't even believe they are real lawyers.
