There is no copyright registration system in the UK, so no way to search. As copyright protects specific artistic images (or writing, recorded performance, music, etc) if you know the image your best bet it to try and identify the artist and either find a date of creation online or contact them/their estate. Copyright persists for 70 years after the death of the author or artist, which should help you determine if it's still active for a lot of things without much research.

Copyright searching

Not only is it difficult to find copyright works, I wouldn't recommend it. To be held to infringe a copyright, the rights owner would have to prove you copied their work. Thus, if you were not aware of the work, how could you have copied it? It would not be that simple if your work very closely resembled the copyright work. In this case, it would be up to you to prove you didn't copy it. Nevertheless, anything more than a quick look-see at an obvious resource for the sort of work you want to create would be a waste of time.

Trademark searching

If you want to avoid infringing a registered trademark, then it is worth getting professional help because it is easy to find false positive results (think you are infringing, but are not) or negative results (think you are in the clear, but you are not) if you are not sure what you are doing.

Also, at least do a Google search for anyone trading under the mark of interest under an unregistered trademark.

Get in touch if you need any more assistance.

Best wishes

There is no registration for copyright in the UK, but you can make searches on the Copyright Register in the USA.

We recommend that a comprehensive search be conducted to check for all similar trade mark applications or registrations where there might be a risk of infringement, in any territory where marketing is to be conducted for the first time under the trade mark concerned - see our factsheet Trade Mark & Marketing Clearance which can be found here.

Our website has plenty of free information on both trade marks and copyright.
