Confused by google page position & Bing search.

Not sure how to explain my confusion.. but here goes. If you submit one of our products in full i.e. Paul Smith Rose 30ml into Google search we are top of the page for that item, which is excellent. However, if you just put in Paul Smith Rose we are not on the first page at all.

This applies to many of our items, the full description elicits a good position, just the title of the item does not. Any idea why this might be?

Analytics has until recently shown a response from Bing, but all of a sudden for the past week or so, it is showing no visits through Bing - any ideas.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Cheers, Phil:|

I have just done 3 searches for your products in Google, Bing and Yahoo for the two descriptions you give and you dominate page one, various retailers adverts and organic terms. If you do these " check " searches on the same PC or IP address you get served up different results than Joe Public would see ? Google gives you your preferences !!

Out of interest, when your hard work has paid off and you've got a visitor to your site, how do you find it converts?

I was wondering if a small bit of investment in product photography might reap dividends in terms of converting prospects to customers. You can still self shoot, but fifty quid spent on a desktop light tent might help the product photos look a little nicer, and help persuade someone to buy from you.

Just a thought, trying to be helpful don't mean to sound rude or anything :)

Absolutely not rude at all - thanks. We have been discussing the photos and whether they are a problem. We simply don't convert enough site visitors and wonder whether that is an issue. We have always done our own photos because it makes us look different to other sites but are considering stock photos. However, we don't want to embark on this if it proves to be a waste of time.

Thanks so much for your constructive input.

No problem Phil, glad you took it in the spirit it was intended. I guess the best way to determine the feasibility of using stock photos is to do some testing on your site, putting two products against each other that generally have similar traffic and conversion levels, one with stock photos and one with your own photos. If you start to notice an improvement you can roll the stock photos out to further products, but if conversions fall off, then you can rethink and try something else.

Although, you're best off getting one of the experts here to run you through the best way to do testing, good luck :)

A classic case of long tail keyword vs the main search term.
Regarding organic search I suspect the page and title competition for 'Paul Smith Rose 50ml' is very small and only a small number of customers type that term into Google or Bing and perhaps add 'EDP' to the end if they do?

You are top for pay per click on that term in google but nothing in Bing according to a search I just did.

There was a very nice chap on here who had an online store called Fragrance Zone but not seen him around for a while
