Commission Based Telesales

Could anyone let me know if there is anyone (or company) out there who would work on a commission based only telesales campaign? I can provide mobile phones for the role?

Just a warning that I have heard horror stories of using people that arent (ahem!) let's just say not quite 100% professional at all times. Just be aware that the wrong person can do more harm than good. manging them remotely is difficult to control what they say and how they sell etc, as they could be brilliant with you, but oh so different with customers.
But I am sure you have this covered - just thought I'd point it out just in case.

What's the value of the product or service they're selling? It will need to be quite high for them to make enough commission.

Emily's right you have to be sensible that the person will make sufficient revenue to make it worth their while.
If the comission is 'too high' then you will attract the wrong sort, who will gamble all to make a quick buck.
You're basically going to need a person in for the long term, happy that if they do a fair days work will have a fair day's pay. Can you guarantee it?

I have had recent conversations with my contacts and they are only interested in commission based telesales if the product is actually worth the risk.

Some enquiries I have recieved are putting all the risk on my contacts. Therefore can I withrdaw my interest in any further enquiries.

Can you say what industry or product/service? Also be wary with providing mobile phones as one lady that worked for me ran up a £300 bill with WAP so a tip would be to make sure that is barred along with mms and other costly services

Oh and just a quick thing to mention is that you are unlikely to get any pipeline information on a commission only so consider if that is important for ongoing marketing or if you want to know who has been called

I agree with Shaun. A lot of people try and place all the risk at the foot of the telemarketer. This is not always the case but I generally find people that come to me with commission only roles are 'testing the market' or know realistic results will mean they pay less than getting a good flat rate company doing the work - not fair. Not all comm onlu though as some of these types of projects can be very lucrative.

I wouldn't want someone I do not know making the company sales calls. I don't know what your business is, but for example, ours is a courier company and I would only consider someone with industry experience to make these calls as if you are not from this background and/or been the shipper yourself for a company all the different shipping methods can be quite a minefield. Would be interesting to hear how you do get on in a couple of months though to update the forum for other people who are or will be in the future looking into the same thing.

Commision only in principle can work. For example if someone wanted my company to sell £10k ecommerce sites and pay me 50% commision you wouldn't be able to get me on the phone quickly enough. Sadly £25 per sale for selling an ad in a new publication just wouldn't do it,

Absolutely agree telemax. I have been approached by people offering me 10% of GP with targets of 10k GP a month knowing it will be a full time gig to hit 10k GP. Meaning if targets are hit we get £1000? no chance. I would do that for a minimum of 50%. It is not being greedy it is just realistic in proportion to the risk involved. I think that most companies should take the longer term view and find a telemarketing company they like and work together in the long term. That way the telemarketing company knows your product and services inside out and they can manage your pipeline of opportunity so you can focus on sales. This does represent a higher upfront cost but it will pay dividends longer term IMO.

We get approached quite a lot for commission based jobs, but generally do no work on them because:

• It's hard to tell if the commission is the right level - many clients, especially new businesses, do not have accurate figures for sales conversions, so there is no way we can calculate an expected income, and therefore GP%
• The client is passing ALL the risk on to us - they often do not have offices, etc, but we have large fixed costs (offices, staff, phone lines,etc). However, they want us to take pretty much 100% of the risk by having commission only
• If we do work on a commission basis, the likely rewards (target commission) would have to be substantially higher than our normal rates to compensate for increased risk, and few are willing to offer this.
• Commission is often based on items outside our control - if we are generating appointments/leads for a client, but they want to pay commission on closed sales, how do we know their sales staff are any good at closing the sale - if they are not, we go to a lot of effort for nothing.

There are some telemarketing companies that will work on commission, and we have done so in the past where we have long-term clients with known conversion rates, but overall it's a business risk we are not willing to take.

I've got an interesting proposal I've created based around commission only payments.

I was planning on sending it to B2B consultants, but this thread gave me an idea...

The amount of commission does not depend upon the number of leads closed by myself, hence your commission is totally in your control and you don't have to rely upon my, or anyone else's, skills to earn commission. All payments are made on a per lead basis.

I know that neither of you are too keen to take on this type of job on, but do you fancy a look at it?
