Does anyone know of a way in which the recipient of a standing order can cancel it?

A standing order is an order by the owner of an account to carry out an action for payment. Unless you are the owner of the account talking the action, you are stuffed.

The only thing you can do is return the payment and contact the person paying you asking them to cancel it.

I'd be very surpised if a recepient could stop it as this is an instruction originating from the sender to his bank and as such, should only be stopped by the sender. I'd be interested to hear other views

As others have said, you are unable to cancel it yourself. Presumably you are out of contact with the sender.

The only option would seem to be to ask your bank to reject the payment - they should be able to do this for you.

No, I don't think you can, but it's an interesting question.

You could just return the money to the account it came from (assuming you have the account number).

Otherwise, shuffle it into a savings account, somewhere you won't just use it, and send back a cheque for a lump some after a few months.

Of course, if you closed the account it is being paid to, then it would be returned to the originator by the bank.

If someone is sending you money you don't want, I'll deal with it for you.
